As millions of people join the challenge of Plastic Free July, I was super excited to order from
My first impression – these nappies are lush!
With beautiful soft material and a thick, snuggly feel I just wanted to hold them to my face for a bit… You know youโre a mum when you get the warm fuzzies over pretty things that hold poop!
Why switch to reusable nappies
Thanks to Plastic Free July Iโve been more conscious of my household contribution to carbon emissions and how I can reduce more waste day-to-day.
If you switch to cloth nappies you will save a tonne of plastic waste – literally! The average child uses around 6,500 nappies from birth to age 3.
I’ll admit that learning how to use reusable nappies was a bit daunting at first. But once I had a routine in place, it was easy enough and nothing can beat that feeling of helping to save the environment.
Also, in the long run, did you know that it’s actually cheaper to invest in and use cloth nappies?
Itโs easy to be deceived by the low cost of disposables alongside your other baby essentials. When I considered my childโs nappy use over about 3 years, the cost of using daily disposables would easily be double that of cloth nappies.
If you’re thinking of purchasing reusable nappies it’s worth checking with your local council as to whether they will offer a rebate for making the sustainable choice to use washable nappies (for example, Wyndham, Mornington Peninsula and Cardinia Shire have such a program in place).
For me, using cloth nappies has also led to less nappy rash for my baby and even a reduction in those lingering smells by the change table.
HOW do Modibodi nappies stand apart
Iโve found the Modibodi nappies to be soft and comfortable on my baby’s skin, and a nice snug fit.
The simple design is super easy to use. I was skeptical as to whether the velcro fastenings would be suitable at first, but itโs just like putting on a disposable nappy and the nappy stays in place while my active Miss 1 moves about all day.
Modibodi nappies will keep your baby dry. Since starting reusable nappies I hadnโt been game to try an overnight cloth nappy and was still using disposable overnight nappies each night for that longer stretch of time.
So I’ll admit I was cynical when I saw the Modibodi nappies promoted as having 12 hoursโ overnight protection.
But with the Modibodi booster insert (which comes included with each Modibodi nappy) it’s true it can last the whole night through! The antimicrobial layers mean they can hold 1 litre of fluid with no leaks.
Iโve been pretty excited to abandon that bag of disposables!
Modibodi themselves say that the sell the best reusable nappies because they haven’t just replicated current cloth nappy designs. They have applied patent-pending technology, which is the unique construction and combination of inner and outer fabrics working together to deliver the benefits other reusable nappies donโt have: superior absorbency, leak-proof outer, fast-drying lining which resists stains, odour and solids.
HOw to clean cloth nappies
As with the entire Modibodi range, easy care instructions are provided with each item.
My method of how to wash cloth nappies? Drop the poo into the toilet to flush away, then just give the nappies a quick rinse in cold water and add them to a dry pail. Once you have a nice pile, chuck them in the machine on a pre-wash. Other items can then be added for a main wash before hanging them up to dry.
With a routine for washing cloth nappies in place, I’ve been pleasantly surprised that there has been a very smooth addition to our daily household schedule.
To make things even simpler for cleaning, you may choose to manage solids with the Modibodi Biodegradable Bamboo Nappy Liner. The bamboo liner sits inside the nappy to catch solids so that you can just lift the liner and pop the poo in the toilet, then dispose of the soiled liner in your compost or rubbish bin.
How many nappies will i need?
The recommendation for changing reusable nappies is the same as for changing disposable nappies. Change before or after each feed (every few hours), or as soon as the nappy has been soiled. A fresh nappy for overnight and again when baby wakes up in the morning are also a good idea.
First, work out how often you want to use reusable nappies. Modibodi recommends the following number if you don’t want to wash every day:
- Part-time use (2-3 per day): 8 to 12 Modibodi reusable nappies
- Full-time day use (4-6 per day): 12 to 24 Modibodi reusable nappies
- Full-time day and night use: (6-8 per day) 24 to 30 Modibodi reusable nappies
Personally, I think every little bit counts! So if we’re not using cloth nappies 100% of the time, every time we choose a cloth nappy over a disposable nappy I feel good that we’re doing a small bit to help the planet.
Modibodi reusable nappies come in a pack of 4 and in a range of bright, vibrant patterns.

If you have a small baby in the early newborn days, you may find over time the fit will get better. The shell has snap buttons that allow you to adjust the fit as your baby grows.
