Melbourne is getting ready for some seriously fun and exciting events these winter school holidays, running from Friday 24 June to Sunday 10 July 2022.

From chilling out at ice rinks to enjoying festive markets, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Because we want to help make sure that you and your family create unforgettably delightful memories together this winter, we've put together this complete list of all the best school holiday events and activities happening all throughout Melbourne's suburbs. This year the winter holidays run from Saturday 24 June to Sunday 10 July 2022.

  • Storytelling Festival Glen Eira (Sat 18 Jun – Sat 2 Jul) – diverse events that celebrate stories and those who tell them.

  • Lightscape (Fri 24 Jun – Sun 7 Aug) – For the very first time, an immersive, after-dark experience comes to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne this winter. Iconic tree canopies will be drenched in colour, vibrant bursts of light will tumble from the undergrowth and run up trees like fizzing fireworks.
  • EMERGE (Fri 24 Jun – Tue 28 Jun) – explore the amazing grounds surrounding Mount Waverley Community Centre at this free event.
  • Southside Live Festival (Fri 24 Jun – Sun 3 Jul) – Across 10 days, listen and enjoy great music, and family-friendly activities all on the doorstep of St Kilda's legendary Fitzroy Street and Acland Street.
  • The Cornucopia Garden (Sat 25 Jun – Sun 17 Jul) – The Plaza will be transformed this winter into an immersive garden abundant with oversized sculptures hidden amongst a swirl of the world’s first edible mist.
  • National Steam Centre (Sun 26 Jun) – The museum engines are fired up and can be seen running on the last Sunday of each month.
  • Henry the Flying Emu with Niraj Lal + Q&A (Sun 26 Jun) – Blast off with Dr Nij and Henry the Flying Emu!
  • Kids go FREE at Gumbuya World (Mon 27 Jun – Sun 10 Jul) – Kids get free admission across the whole school holidays at Gumbuya World! Enjoy different wildlife activities happening every weekday and the Rides and Wildlife which are open on the weekends.
  • Fizz Kidz Malvern East (Mon 27 Jun – Fri 1 Jul, Mon 5 July – Fri 8 Jul) – Creative, hands-on holiday program to make awesome Fizz Kidz creations!

  • Dress Up Box with The Kazoos (Mon 4 Jul) – a musical comedy that explores character, gender-identity and role play through a simple game of dress ups.
  • GlowZone UV Sports (Tue 5 Jul) – Join us at GlowZone for 2 hours of epic indoor UV sports! The session will include glow dodgeball, glow soccer and glow volleyball with a break mid-session for BYO lunch.
  • Yarn Bombing (Thu 7 Jul) – Come along and meet some of the GLAD rappers, learn about yarn bombing and maybe make some pieces and get involved in yarn bombing.
  • Children’s International Film Festival (CHIFF) (Sun 28 May – Thu 13 Jun) – a festival of the best new kids' films from across the world. See the Moomins, '80s classic The Secret of NIMH and a modern retelling of Cinderella, alongside tales of fallen star friends, dragons and lion cubs who need to be returned home
  • Little Play Squad (Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays) – An interactive parent-child Play & Learn sessions based on LEGO® DUPLO®

  • Seek and Find Nature Cards (Until 30 Jun 2022) Set your young ones on an adventure exploring nature with our Seek and Find Nature Cards to be used at Melbourne Gardens or download the cards and go exploring in your own neighbourhood.
  • Gumbuya Wildlife Wanderers (every Wednesday & Thursday) – Storytime, games, Nature Play-based activities plus the opportunity to meet some very special animals!

  • Frankston Community Market (Sundays) – a weekly community market located in the very heart of Frankston, featuring an ever-changing variety of stalls.
  • Mornington Railway (Sundays) – Climb aboard the Mornington Railway steam train for a fun-filled outing.
  • Seeing the Invisible (Until Fri 30 Sep) – contemporary artworks created with augmented reality (AR) technology, is presented in six countries simultaneously with Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and Cranbourne as the exclusive Australian locations.
  • Gasworks Farmers’ Market (Third Saturday of every month until Sun 18 Dec) – On Saturdays soak up the vibrant atmosphere and sample the very best of local Victorian produce, directly from Victorian farmers and specialty makers.
  • Prahran Market Kids’ Activities (ongoing) – every market day Prahran Market offers face painting, an animal farm, kids dance classes and music – most activities are free and no bookings necessary.
  • Camelot Traffic School (Weekends and School Holidays) Ride or scoot in this miniature city and get practical experience riding and learning some road rules. Located in Bentleigh East. Check their hours on their website before you go as they are subject to change. Read my review.

  • Musical theatre with the Ministry of Dance (Thu 30 Jun) – Work through the moves of musical theatre dance, to make sure you put on a performance of a lifetime. This workshop is suitable for children aged 5 to 8 years old.
