Waru: Journey of the Small Turtle
This contemporary tale, rooted in Torres Strait Islander culture, centres around the life of a green turtle named Migi. Set against the backdrop of the Torres Strait’s starlit skies, the story unfolds as Migi embarks on a quest, returning to her birthplace amidst the nesting season.
The narrative, designed for children aged 3 to 7, offers an interactive and immersive introduction to Torres Strait Islander traditions and dances.

Crafted by Stephen Page, Bangarra’s former Artistic Director, in collaboration with Hunter Page-Lochard, Sani Townson, and Elma Kris – all esteemed choreographers and alumni of Bangarra – Waru not only entertains, but also serves as a valuable tool for parents, caregivers, and educators.
Through Migi’s adventures, the production facilitates discussions about pressing issues such as climate change and environmental conservation. Additionally, it explores essential cultural values like respect and reciprocity, making it a rich and meaningful experience for young audiences.

The performance is an uplifting activity for families, and especially for children aged between 3 – 7 years old. It runs for 45 minutes, with no interval.
