HOT: Thornhill Park, Rockbank

Wilshire Park, the mainย Thornhill Park playground, is a brilliant local park for the residential community of Thornhill Parkย inย Rockbank Melton.

The Thornhill Park playground rises high on the hill above the Rockbank display homes and sale centre and you canโ€™t miss the distinctive orange structures.

The park is medium-sized and most of the equipment is suitable for older kids because the playground is dominated by a very high rope climb structure and a rotating rope climb pyramid.

Stemming from the rope climb are some other challenging climbs and two wide and reasonably steep slides.

The double see-saw is fun but can also get quite boisterous as itโ€™s long.

If you are visiting Thornhill Park Melbourne with babies and toddlers then they will probably spend most of their time in the sand pit area and the swings. There are two banks of swings – one is a small next swing and the other with a toddler swing and standard swing. Neither of the swings are very tall.

The sandpit area has two diggers and a series of stepping stones and logs that act as an obstacle course.

Our main gripe with the sandpit is the sand is very gritty! If youโ€™re going to put artificial sand in a playground I donโ€™t know why youโ€™d choose gritty gravel. It is uncomfortable with shoes off and the grit spreads out onto the tiled picnic shelter/footpath and causes a slipping hazard. I spot a couple of kids with shoes on losing their footing on the edge of the sandpit.

We do like the honeycomb letters and numbers set out in the flooring though, as they make for an interesting game of hopscotch.

There are shaded barbecues, water taps and bike racks.

Wiltshire Park has the makings of a great community space for the Rockbank Thornhill Park community but it needs to do something about the gravel/sand and to provide toilets nearby.

If youโ€™re visiting the Melton area then I recommend tacking on a trip to the excellent playgrounds at Woodleaย about 5 minutes drive away up the Western Freeway.
