Selwyn Park Albion: A Local Playground Families Can Spend All Day At

For a westside playground that genuinely keeps kids busy, Selwyn Park in Albion is well worth adding to your list. Itโ€™s spacious, leafy and thoughtfully designed, with enough variety to suit toddlers, primary-school kids and even parents who want more than just a bench and a swing set.

This is the kind of park where we arrive for โ€œjust a playโ€ and end up staying half the day.

Visiting Selwyn Park Albion

The playground: something for every age

The main playground area is large and spread out, which makes it easy for kids to move freely without everything feeling crowded.

The standout feature and my kidsโ€™ personal favourite is the castle-style play structure, complete with climbing elements and slides that kids can approach from different angles.

It encourages imaginative play as much as physical movement, which is a win for mixed-age siblings.

I love that we can bring bikes and scooters and actually use them properly. The paths are smooth, wide and feel safe, even with younger riders.

Thereโ€™s also:

  • A generous sandpit for digging, building and scooping
  • Swings for different ages
  • A climbing cube that older kids love testing themselves on
  • A spinning carousel thatโ€™s always popular

Everything is set among tall gum trees, with plenty of natural landscaping. Kids can weave through shrubs, play hide-and-seek and enjoy a more โ€œwildโ€ feel than many newer playgrounds.

Easy spots to stop, eat and reset

Selwyn Park is well set up for families planning a longer day. There are BBQs available, along with undercover picnic tables that provide shade and shelter.

Itโ€™s easy to bring lunch, set up a base and let the kids come and go as they please.

The open layout also makes it simple to keep an eye on multiple children without feeling boxed into one small area.

Room to move beyond the playground

One of Selwyn Parkโ€™s biggest strengths is what surrounds it. Right next to the playground youโ€™ll find:

  • A large grassed oval, perfect for kicking a footy or running off extra energy
  • A nearby tennis club
  • Outdoor workout stations for parents or teens
  • Smooth paved paths that are ideal for bikes, balance bikes and scooters
  • A bike repair and pump station, which is surprisingly handy if youโ€™re riding in

This means kids can easily move between structured play, free running and riding without having to pack up and relocate.

Kororoit Creek trails for walking and riding

Just beyond the park, Kororoit Creek offers peaceful walking and cycling trails. If you have older kids, this is a great way to extend your visit with a short ride or nature walk.

Itโ€™s also a nice option if one child wants to play while another needs a quieter break.

Nearby playground bonus

If youโ€™ve got energetic kids who love obstacle-style equipment, the Ninja Training Playground is only a short scoot away. Many families pair the two parks together, especially on weekends, for a full morning or afternoon out.

Where to grab a coffee nearby

No family outing is complete without a decent coffee. Sadie Black is a popular nearby cafรฉ and a great option for grabbing drinks or food before or after your park visit. Itโ€™s close enough to feel convenient, but far enough that it doesnโ€™t add to the noise of the playground.

Practical tips for visiting Selwyn Park

  • Bring bikes or scooters if you can. The paths are smooth and well-used.
  • Pack sunscreen and hats. While there is shade, kids often move between sunny areas.
  • If youโ€™re planning to use the BBQs, arriving earlier in the day helps secure a spot.
  • Great for mixed-age families. Toddlers can stay close to the playground while older kids explore further.
