Melbourneโ€™s Newest Riverfront Playground: Exploring Seafarers Rest with Kids

A green oasis in the heart of the city, steeped in maritime history.

If youโ€™re looking for a fresh new spot to stretch little legs, enjoy some greenery and soak up city viewsโ€”all without leaving the CBDโ€”put Seafarers Rest Park on your list.

This thoughtfully designed open space on the north bank of the Yarra River is one of Melbourneโ€™s newest public parks. Itโ€™s packed with clever design features that make it perfect for families, with a mix of nature, history, and fun.

Where is Seafarers Rest Park Playground?

Youโ€™ll find Seafarers Rest Park tucked between the Mission to Seafarers heritage building and the Seafarers Bridge, right by the water in Docklands. Itโ€™s within easy walking distance of the Melbourne Convention Centre, the World Trade Centre, and Flinders Wharf Apartmentsโ€”yet it feels worlds away thanks to the expansive lawns and lush native plantings.

So, whatโ€™s in it for the kids?

The new playground isnโ€™t huge, but it packs a punch. A climbing rope structure encourages big imaginations and active play, while two in-ground trampolines are perfect for burning off energy. There are two swings, including a popular hammock swing thatโ€™s great for relaxing or rocking younger kids.

It’s not a typical metal-and-plastic setup. The equipment is integrated into the landscape with a natural, shipyard-inspired lookโ€”think timber, ropes, and smooth curves that blend beautifully with the riverside setting.

Thereโ€™s lots of grass for a picnic or a roll down the hill, and plenty of seating for grown-ups to relax while the kids play. A water fountain makes it easy to refill bottlesโ€”handy on warm days.

Designed for All-Day Enjoyment

The playground is part of a bigger picture. Seafarers Rest Park is designed as a multi-use public space that invites everyoneโ€”from toddlers to touristsโ€”to slow down and enjoy the riverfront.

There are walking and cycling paths lined with indigenous planting, open lawns for kicking a ball or lounging in the sun, and sculptural timber benches inspired by shipping crates that nod to the siteโ€™s working port history.

The park is also equipped for events, with an Events Deck and areas designed for markets, live music and community gatherings. Expect to see this space become a go-to for cultural events and family-friendly festivals!

A Park with a Story

Seafarers Rest Park is more than just a pretty spot to play. Itโ€™s part of a larger $600 million redevelopment by Riverlee, which includes the upcoming 1 Hotel Melbourne and Seafarers Residences.

Once a working industrial site, the land has been transformed into a green hub with strong ties to the area’s maritime past.

Curated artefactsโ€”some sourced from the Offshore & Speciality Ships Associationโ€”add layers of meaning, while interpretive signs and design details pay homage to both the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, the Traditional Custodians of the land, and the generations of seafarers who passed through Melbourneโ€™s port.

Make a Day of It

Planning a visit? Hereโ€™s what weโ€™d recommend:

  • Pack a picnic or snacks to enjoy on the grass. The park is mostly open-air and ideal for lounging with river views.
  • Drop into the Mission to Seafarers, just next door. Open from 12pm daily, this heritage building is worth a look for its peaceful courtyard, fascinating maritime artefacts, and the iconic Norla Dome. Itโ€™s a short, self-guided visit that older kids and grandparents will enjoy too.
  • Bring bikes or scooters. The adjacent river paths are flat and scenicโ€”ideal for a family ride or scoot.
  • Finish with a treat at one of the cafes nearby in Docklands or cross the Seafarers Bridge to South Wharf for more options.

A New Favourite City Spot

Seafarers Rest Park Playground feels like a fresh chapter for Melbourneโ€™s riverfront. Itโ€™s green, welcoming, and well designedโ€”a place where city kids can run wild, locals can relax, and visitors can get a dose of nature without going far.

If youโ€™re staying at 1 Hotel Melbourne in the future, youโ€™ll be lucky enough to have it at your doorstep. But even if youโ€™re just passing through for a day out in the city, itโ€™s well worth a visit.
