Sometimes you don’t want a cafe with a highchair squeezed between tables — you want somewhere the kids can actually run around while you finish a meal without cutting it into fun-size pieces one-handed. The Inner West and Melbourne’s west more broadly does this well, from beer gardens with cubby houses to indoor playgrounds tucked behind pub bistros.
This list covers Footscray, Yarraville, Spotswood, Maribyrnong, Newport, Williamstown and Altona, plus a run of solid options further out in Brimbank — Keilor, St Albans, Deer Park and Sunshine. Most have a genuine, dedicated play space for kids, not just a couple of toys in a corner — a couple of exceptions are included further down for their strong family-friendly vibe, and I’ve said so plainly where that’s the case.

Footscray
1. Station Hotel
Station Hotel is known as much for its steaks as its family offering these days. The gated outdoor courtyard has a two-level cubby house and play kitchen, with shade sails over the deck. Sunday Funday runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm with a $10 kids menu, free face painting and balloon twisting, plus a petting farm or reptile zoo depending on the week. Kids eat free with any adult main on Tuesdays and Wednesdays too.

2. The Victoria Hotel, Footscray
Not to be confused with the Victoria Hotel in Yarraville below, this is a separate pub on Victoria Street with its own outdoor playground and plenty of space for strollers and scooters. There’s regular live music and weekend events, and an all-day menu that covers pub classics through to vegan options.

3. Harley and Rose
Harley and Rose doesn’t have a dedicated play structure, but it’s worth including for the enclosed courtyard out back where kids have room to move while you eat, plus pram access, highchairs, a change table and a proper kids menu of pizzas, spaghetti and schnitzel. It’s directly across from West Footscray Library, which runs a Friday Storytime session during school terms if you want to make a morning of it.

Yarraville
4. Victoria Hotel
Victoria Hotel is the benchmark for this list. Following a multi-million-dollar renovation, it now has both an indoor playroom and an outdoor playground in the beer garden. The indoor room is themed as a mini-Yarraville, with a café cubby, reading corner, magnetic wall, soft play blocks and a train kids can climb into. Free onsite parking, easy pram access, highchairs, baby change facilities and a kids menu with healthy options round it out, plus live kids entertainment every Sunday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm.

Spotswood
5. Grazeland
Grazeland’s Jungle Hangout play area makes it worth a mention, though it’s more food precinct than pub. Worth knowing: it’s open Friday to Sunday only, with a small entry fee and free admission for kids under 12, right next to Scienceworks.

Maribyrnong
6. Anglers Tavern
Sitting on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, Anglers Tavern has a playground in the outdoor beer garden along with river views. It’s a good pick for sunny weekends when the kids need somewhere to stretch their legs after lunch.

Newport
7. Junction Hotel
There’s no dedicated play area at Junction Hotel, but it’s worth including for the genuine family-friendly vibe, especially on weekday afternoons. Kids under 12 get a free serve of rigatoni bolognaise between 4:30pm and 6pm, Tuesday to Friday, while parents can enjoy cheaper beer and wine during the same window. It’s an art deco building right by Newport station, with a beer garden, wine room and a kids menu on the regular offering too.

8. Hobsons Bay Hotel
Hobsons Bay Hotel doesn’t have a dedicated kids’ play space either, but it’s a solid family option if you’re after something a step up from standard pub grub — think a provincial Italian menu with a rooftop terrace looking back over the bay to the city. There’s plenty of pram space, highchairs and a kids menu, though it’s worth knowing the bathrooms are upstairs, which is a bit of a trek with a pram in tow.

Altona
9. Hecho en Mexico
Hecho en Mexico brings Mexican food to Pier Street with a back courtyard that can be fully enclosed in cooler weather, complete with a play kitchen, table and chairs, and colouring activities. The menu is kid-friendly with gluten-free and vegan options, and it’s a two-minute walk from Altona Beach.

10. Altona Sports Club
Altona Sports Club is a relaxed, unfussy bayside club with a colourful enclosed play area and a well-priced kids menu covering nuggets, pasta and fish and chips. It’s a five-minute walk from Altona Beach and the pier, making it an easy wind-down spot after a swim.

Brimbank isn’t always grouped with the Inner West, but it’s close enough and has enough strong family options that it’s worth including here rather than making families hunt separately.
11. Slices
Slices in Keilor pairs stylish, modern Italian dining with a fully enclosed indoor playground tucked at the back of the venue. The play area has a colourful climbing structure, slide and soft flooring, and it’s visible from most tables so you can keep an eye on things while eating woodfired pizza or pasta. The kids menu covers spaghetti bolognese and chicken nuggets, and there’s plenty of room inside for prams or larger groups.

12. St Albans Hotel
St Albans Hotel has been a family fixture in Melbourne’s north-west for years, with an indoor playground and playstations to keep kids busy while the bistro serves up steaks, seafood, pasta and pub classics. There’s a dedicated kids menu and an affordable seniors menu too, so it works well for a multi-generational lunch.

Deer Park Club has one of the more substantial play setups on this list: a double-storey kids playground plus weekly kids activities, alongside a large family bistro and an outdoor courtyard with a big screen. It’s a proper local social club rather than a pub, so the vibe is relaxed and no one bats an eye at a full table of kids.
