Facing Seddon train station is a little neat row of shops and old Edwardian cottages on and one and a half of them has now been transformed into a gorgeous cafe called Fig and Walnut.

family friendly seddon cafe
The inside of Fig and Walnut is dressed like a French chateauโs drawing room, with navy blue panels, olde worlde chandeliers and gilt mirrors, one of which beckons โWelcomeโ.

Out the back is the most adorable courtyard made just for families. Hopscotch tiles lead you to a large wooden cubby house with chalk boards and along one side are raised garden beds with seedlings neatly sprouting.

I suspect that they will have to replace their poor grass patch with synthetic turf soon with the damage that trampling little feet have already wreaked on it.

The menu is split into all day choices and lunch from 11:30am. The options are sophisticated and the pricing is similarly upmarket, though not out of range for Seddonโs burgeoning affluent population.

We have the crushed avocado with goats cheese and poached eggs on sourdough ($16), hot oat porridge baked rhubarb, saffron poached pears, berries and coyo ($14.90), chia porridge/pudding with almond milk, also with the pears, berries and coyo ($14.90), gluten-free pancakes ($18) and a gruyere and chive omelette with sourdough ($15.90).

Everything is artistically presented. The highlight is the grainy pancakes bursting with colour – a generous scoop of coconut ice cream and maple mascarpone, saffron poached pear, berries, walnut, pistachio crumble and maple syrup.

We try all of the three smoothies ($7) and recommend the banana, oats, honey, yoghurt smoothie particularly, though all three need to be served colder. The coffee comes from Fitzroyโs Industry Beans.

Thereโs no kids menu specifically but sometimes there are blackboard options. There are numerous high chairs and plenty of pram space outside, though only a single bi-fold door to get to the outdoor area so wide double prams may not be able to move beyond the main room.

Some of the sweets are made in house, the pastries come from Sourdough Kitchen in Seddon and the scrolls are all the way from Sydneyโs Oregano Bakery.

Fig and Walnut gives Seddon locals another great breakfast and lunch option with a cosy interior and wonderful outdoor area made just for families. Note that all of their menu is available to take away via Skip app so itโs perfect for commuters (or parents) who want to grab and go.
