HOT: Mappin Reserve, Seddon

Mappin Reserveย ย is a brightly coloured playground in Seddon. Given how close it is to a primary school and increasing numbers of young families in the area Iโ€™m surprised that itโ€™s almost always deserted.

All the better for us I guess, as Mappin Reserve is one of our favourite neighbourhood playgrounds.

The large playground is split into three areas and is segmented by coloured walls (which the kids loved walking along) but no fence.

There is an area more suitable for toddlers with a short slide from a low climbing frame, a toddler level swing and the highlight of the whole playground – a jeep which you can steer which is balanced on springs so the whole structure moves with vigorous motion.

Given the age group for the toddler equipment itโ€™s surprising that the ground cover is concrete rather than rubber or woodchips.

There is a large sandpit with scoops, slides and balancing equipment which is almost all covered by a sun shade, making it a great option for summer days.

The last area is for older children – Lady AB could climb up some of the structure but not Baby 2.0 and she still couldnโ€™t make it up about 50% of the equipment such as the climbing wall, spider web and tyre ladder.

The double slides at the back corner are fun though and the wooden climbing ladder set into the slope encouraged Baby 2.0 to really develop his gross motor skills.

Features:

  • suitable for toddlers;
  • sandpit with equipment;
  • shade sails and some natural shade;
  • picnic table, tap (not working on our visit); and
  • seating.
