Scienceworks Summer School Holidays 2025/26: Sound, Space and Hands-On Fun

Scienceworks is bringing big energy to the summer school holidays with a packed program of hands-on exhibitions, live science shows and Planetarium adventures. From building cubbies in Tinkertown to launching rockets and travelling through the planets, this is one holiday destination that blends fun with learning in the best possible way.

SCIENCEWORKS SUMMER SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

1. Build, Create and Problem-Solve at Tinkertown

Open daily | 10am โ€“ 4.30pm
Tickets: Adult $25 | Senior $22 | Child $10 | Concession $10 | Member $8

Tinkertown is a dream space for curious kids who love to build, invent and experiment. This immersive exhibition invites children to explore the engineering design process through play.

Kids can:

  • Build cubby houses and imaginative structures
  • Tackle hands-on design challenges
  • Send secret messages
  • Invent playful and slightly wacky contraptions

Itโ€™s a wonderful mix of creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, and it suits a wide range of ages. Expect kids to leave buzzing with ideas and energy.

2. Ready to Launch Show: Rockets in Action

Opens Saturday 20 December | Amphitheatre
Tickets: Adult $15 | Senior $12 | Child Free | Concession Free | Member Free

This free live show is always a crowd favourite. Watch real rockets blast into the sky and learn the science behind how they launch into space.

The presenters break down the forces involved in rocket flight in a way thatโ€™s easy for kids to understand and genuinely exciting to watch. Itโ€™s loud, fast-paced and completely unforgettable.

3. Whatโ€™s in the Sky Tonight: Journey Through the Planets

Planetarium Show
Tickets: Adult $25 | Senior $22 | Child $10 | Concession $10 | Member $8

This special presenter-led Planetarium show takes families on a guided journey through our Solar System. The experience begins right here on Earth, looking up at the Melbourne night sky, before travelling past the inner rocky planets and heading out towards the massive gas giants.

Itโ€™s an ideal introduction to astronomy for school-aged kids and a beautiful, immersive experience for adults too.

4. The Glow Show: Light, Colour and Lightning

Daily at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm | Lightning Theatre
Tickets: Adult $25 | Senior $22 | Child $10 | Concession $10 | Member $8

This visually stunning 30-minute live science show explores everything that glows. Kids will discover:

  • The science of fluorescence
  • How animals appear bright at night
  • How different materials create coloured light

The finale is a standout moment, with a giant Tesla coil lighting up the theatre using more than two million volts of electricity. Itโ€™s dramatic, educational and completely mesmerising.

5. Tycho Goes to Mars: A Family Favourite Returns

20 December โ€“ 27 January
Weekdays 11.30am | Weekends 11am | Planetarium
Tickets: Adult $25 | Senior $22 | Child $10 | Concession $10 | Member $8

Tycho, the cheeky dog kids know and love, is heading to Mars. This charming Planetarium show follows his adventure as he explores the red planet and learns about its major features, including Olympus Mons and the vast Valles Marineris canyons.

Itโ€™s designed especially for younger audiences and is a perfect first Planetarium experience.

6. FlushBack

FlushBack, Scienceworksโ€™ new, award-winning AR adventure, brings to life the awe-inspiring heritage-listed Spotswood Pumping Station. 

Understand the importance of sewerage systems and how they fit into the water cycle – and have fun doing it!
