For 64 years Myer has brought Christmas joy to many people through its annual Christmas window display at its flagship Melbourne Bourke Street store. The Myer Christmas Windows 2019 theme is based on the Gumnut Babies, the work of a much loved Australian female author and illustrator, May Gibbs.
I just love this Australian take on Christmas! A large population of cute, roly-poly Gumnut Babies are displayed in various scenes as they prepare for the festive season.
There are even some Melbourne-specific touches. Look out for the sign for Bourke Street and a map of Melbourne held by a Gumnut Baby!
I adore the babies’ wide-eyed expressions, pinchable baby bottoms and costumes made from native Australian flora such as wattle and waratah.

Various Australian native animals make an appearance too, including a Santa Koala!
The animatronics aren’t as intricate as previous years but I don’t think that detracts from the experience. There are still crowds of excited children and their adults pressing their noses against the glass.
I overhear lots of cooing exclamations of ‘it’s sooo cute!’ and it seems the crowd consensus seems to be positive.
International visitors who are not familiar with the Gumnut Babies may be a bit confused about the characters and stories.
Luckily you can buy the book ‘A Snugglepot and Cuddlepie Christmas’ on the Level 6 Myer Giftorium so you can familiarise yourself with May Gibbs’ work. It’s also a lovely souvenir of your trip to the Myer Christmas Windows and the Myer Giftorium is full of other gift ideas.
The Myer Christmas Windows are part of many families’ Christmas traditions and I love seeing young and old admiring the displays. The best time to go is early in the morning and late at night to avoid the crowds. The Myer Christmas Windows are open daily until Sunday 5 January 2020.
If you go during the daytime then your photos are likely to have lots of reflections from the glass. Press your lens as close to the glass as possible and use your head/body to create a background shadow.
Also at Myer this Christmas you’ll find the Level 6 Santaland with Santa photos and a life-sized train that whisks shoppers on a virtual journey from Myer Central Station to Santaland, stopping at the Toy Factory along the way.
