HOT: Murrumbeena Park, Murrumbeena

Murrumbeena Park is one of south-east Melbourne’s most popular playgrounds and it’s easy to see why. The large play space has different ‘zones’ which means that kids of all ages can explore and play for hours.

The design combines nature play, a toddler area, a flying fox plus multiple slides and swings with traditional playground equipment.

Two parts of the playground particularly stand out for me. The dry creek bed has lots of rocks to clamber on and over, which just goes to show that playground equipment doesn’t have to be fancy in order to be fun. The greenery and rocks inspire lots of imaginary play and the natural elements are highlighted by the lovely wooden sculptures adorning the bridge.

I also really like the spiral with brightly coloured poles and the two centrepieces – a musical chime sculpture and a wooden one-eyed snail!

The flying fox is popular but at 3yo Baby 2.0 is possibly a little bit too small for it as the disc seat is quite tall (as is the starting platform). He has one go and decides ‘no thanks’. The large suspended stand-on spinner and swing are more his level.

Other great features include two accessible swings, a bird’s nest swing, a climbing web, wooden cubby and A-frame tent cubby, several soft fall climbing walls and a zippy little merry-go-round.

The play space also adjoins the oval and cricket pitch and Baby 2.0 had great fun sprinting on the pristine lawn.

The playground isn’t fenced but there is fencing along busy Kangaroo Road with small gaps near but not right at the playground. There are barbecues and picnic shelters, a water tap, unshaded wooden bench seating integrated into the playground and a fancy public toilet that Baby 2.0 has so much fun in that he requests to go twice! Everything operates with a touch of a button and you can do your business to a soundtrack of ‘What the World Needs Now’!

Murrumbeena Park with a visit to the nearby shopping strip around Murrumbeena station is a half-day adventure. A weekday morning is the best time to visit – after school, on weekends and during school holidays the play space is dominated by big kids.
