These January summer school holidays kids can sketch, paint and cast all sort of models at Melbourne Museum as part of the Mini Mega Makers Workshop. The workshops are inspired by the Museum‘s latest exhibition – Mini Mega Model Museum and are running twice daily from 27 December to 27 January 2020. It makes a great indoor activity if the weather’s too hot, wet or the air is too smoky to be outdoors.
The 2.5 hour workshop meets at the museum entrance hall, just beyond the ticket office, and every child is given a coloured wristband with their name and guardian’s phone number on it (in case they get lost enroute). The colours later correspond to a making station in the workshop.
As a group we walk up to the entrance of Mini Mega Model Museum.
The exhibition has more than 300 models and miniatures that have been a part of Museum’s Victoria’s State Collection since its founding in 1854. We are tasked to find the oldest model, the smallest model and our favourite model for about 15-20 minutes.
We then move to the workshop area, a custom space in the former Body gallery on the first floor.

It’s large, with six different making stations featuring paint to play dough, straw and paper.
There’s even a stop-motion animation gallery where you can bring your models to life!
Mini Mega Makers Workshop is aimed at kids aged 6-12 years but I notice younger children in attendance during our session. I think younger children can still participate as long as their adult gets involved to help, but they might not want to stay for the whole 2 hours.
There are plenty of facilitators at each station to help and guide. Our session has approximately 40 children in it, but it doesn’t feel crowded or overly busy at all. Some sessions have had as few as 10 kids in them, so it’s luck of the draw.
The 2 hours flies by and in fact, we run out of time to experience every station. Lady AB spends a lot of time decorating her paper clay objects while Baby 2.0 enjoys moulding play-dough. We take some of the models home and leave some behind to add to the diorama of the Melbourne skyline and Great Ocean Road.
Families seeking other fun indoor activities this summer holidays have a huge range of activities to choose from at Melbourne Museum. We spend the rest of the hiding from the heat and the smoke and enjoy visiting the Children’s Gallery, Road to Zero exhibition, the Gut Feelings temporary exhibition and the ever-popular Dinosaur Walk. If you visit with under 5s you can even enter the museum an hour earlier at 9am for Play Box.
Mini Mega Model Museum is included in Melbourne Museum entry and will remain open at this stage until August 2020. The Mini Mega Makers Workshop runs from Friday 27 December to Monday 27 January 2020.
