HOT: Gut Feelings, Melbourne Museum, Carlton

The gut is a very ‘on-trend’ at the moment! You’ll find kombucha and kimchi on every café menu and lots of talk about gut health, gut microbiomes and gut microbes in Sunday lifestyle magazines and cookbooks.

Melbourne Museum’s latest temporary exhibition is all about Gut Feelings. It explores how new science shows that our gut and mental health are linked in ways researchers are only just discovering.

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

The Melbourne-based performance theatre duo are the wise ‘Gut Guides’ who teach kids all about the human body with silly songs, activities, projections and more.

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

Each child is allocated a food group before being ingested (ie climbing inside) a huge scale human digestive system.

During the 45 minute session, they learn about how food is turned into energy…

….crawl through the stomach, small intestine, large intestine…..

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

….draw their own healthy microbes…

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

….before each child is pooed out of a giant bum to the sounds of the Blue Danube….or rather, the Poo Danube!

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

The show is generally suitable for kids 6+ years because they will not be accompanied by an adult and need to be able to follow instructions. Some of the spaces are quite small so kids will need to crawl. Note also that the ‘whoosh whoosh squelch’ digestive system sounds can be quite loud at times, so the combination of dim light, enclosed spaces and creepy sounds may not suit all kids.

Gut Feeling Born in a Taxi

Born in a Taxi presents: Gut Feeling is a fun and educational show that’s sure to inspire laughter and learning, long after your little ones leave the show.
