Women’s Activewear that’s sustainable, inclusive & fun: Mama Movement

I normally only wear activewear to exercise, and when I exercise I generally wear head-to-toe black. But with more time spent at home, I decided to brighten my black days by purchasing some more colourful activewear from Australian brand Mama Movement.

Now I wear my Mama Movement activewear daily, not just for exercising or going to the gym!

Womens Activewear Australia

Mama Movement is a Melbourne-based label selling women’s activewear and matching kidswear that features fun and colourful designer prints created in collaboration with Australian artists.

Mamma Movement Four Women Exercise Pose

Their first active wear collection started selling in late July and has already gathered a passionate following on Instagram. Lots of women have declared them to be their new favourite pair of tights, with comments like โ€œIโ€™m ruined. The rest of my leggings just look so dull and drab next to my Mama Movement leggings now!โ€.

But itโ€™s not just fun and colourful. Itโ€™s seriously good activewear with a focus on sustainability.

Mama Movement‘s current range includes Everyday Leggings in full-length and 7/8-length, and a โ€˜Be Boldโ€™ long line crop top in two matching prints. Sizes start at XS Size 8 and run all the way to 2XL Size 18 for plus size.

As I am 163cm (average women’s height) I actually find the 7/8 tights to be full length for me, so the full-length tights will be actually full length for taller women! I can still get away with wearing the full-length tights; they are just a bit scrunched at the ankle.

Mamma Movement Blue Tights Phone Pocket

The activewear pocket tights are super high-waisted leggings that never budge and keep your mid-section well supported. There are two large side pockets for your phone, keys and face mask (the new 3 essential items!).

I do some energetic high knees to test them out and nothing falls out!

The tights are suitable as exercise leggings, yoga pants, gym gear or just for being comfy at home or when going out! I like to wear my black bubble printed leggings under a skirt with my Merry People gumboots.

The matching crops tops feature comfy straps and signature sewn-in padding on both sides so youโ€™ll never have to worry about scrunched up padding again or a mono-boob!

Mama Movement 4

There are currently two prints in the range, with a third rainbow-inspired print coming at the end of August. The print is called Rainbow Warrior and is inspired by the use of rainbows as a symbol of hope for children during challenging times.

This set will include blue printed leggings and a matching rainbow print sports bra with a hooked back – so you donโ€™t have to perform a contortion act to get out of your sweaty sports bra. I canโ€™t wait to get my hands on these!

I buy both the pocket tights and the crop tops in size Small, which equates to a size AU10. As I’m anywhere between a size 8 and size 10 in clothing (usually an inconvenient size 9), I also try on the Extra Small (about AU8) but those are definitely too small for me.

So I’d say the sizing runs true to size, which is particularly useful to know if you’re looking for plus size activewear.

One of the women used to model the range is also an AU10 so you can see how the sizing fits on her.

Mama Movement Kidswear

Mama Movement offers matching kidswear too, with certified organic cotton Tshirts and tights in the same patterns as the printed leggings.

The kidswear range caters for little boys and little girls size 000 to 6 years who want to match with their mum. How fun!

Mama Movement Sustainable Activewear

The Mama Movement range is sustainable – but what does that actually mean?

The high-performance activewear fabric is predominantly made with recycled polyester, constructed from 100% recycled materials like post-consumer water bottles and pre-consumer waste plastics.

This not only rescues plastic destined for landfill, but also helps offset the use of petroleum, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserving water and energy compared to virgin polyester.

I am worried that the tights feel a bit plasticky at first compared to my other activewear leggings and that they might not breathe as well. But after a vigorous run, I notice the fabric doesn’t hold sweat and they’re not sticky or hard to take off.

In addition, their T-shirts, tanks and kidswear are all madeย with super soft organic cotton grown without the use of chemical pesticides or harmful chemicals and using eco-friendly inks. The kids-wear is even GOTS-certified!

Finally, it’s all in the little things. The thank you cards, and even the little hang tags are made from recycled paper! Then all orders are packed in compostable mailer bags and wrapping paper. The mailer bags compost in 6 months and are certified for both home and commercial compost.

Mama Movement promotes body positivity

Finally, Mama Movement is owned and run by Faye Tan, a Melbourne mama who is on a body positivity mission. That’s why the brand’s motto is to ‘sprinkle positivity’!

Faye says: โ€œAs women, the sad reality is that so many of us have looked at ourselves in the mirror and said cruel and unkind words about ourselves. In fact, 72% of Australian women (aged 18+) say they would like to lose weight. One big contributing factor is the lack of diversity in the media about what a โ€˜beautiful womanโ€™ looks like. Through this label, I am on a mission to show that strong and beautiful comes in lots of different shapes, sizes and colours. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ll never produce boring black activewear. Because each womanโ€™s body is so beautiful and so unique, it deserves to be celebrated with COLOUR!โ€.

That also means that Mama Movement‘s product images and advertising showcases real women of all shapes, sizes and ethnic backgrounds. Hooray!

The Mama Movement Instagram account is a refreshing reaction to the standard Anglo, just-out-of-their-teens fitness model with the ‘perfect’ body that’s never seen stretch marks or cellulite, let alone ‘baby weight’.

I really love everything that Mama Movement stands for – an activewear label that inclusive of all body shapes and women of colour, looks super fun and feels amazing and is kind to the planet.
