Cape Otway Lighthouse with Kids: A Parent’s Guide to the Great Ocean Road’s Most Historic Site

โš ๏ธ Important update: The Cape Otway Lighthouse tower is currently closed for heritage restoration works. There is no public access to the lighthouse interior or tower climbs at this time, and no confirmed reopening date has been announced. The heritage precinct, telegraph station, WWII radar bunker, whale interpretation centre and cafรฉ all remain open with discounted entry. Check lightstation.com for the latest updates before your visit.

There’s something about a lighthouse that kids just love. The height. The history. The idea that this lonely tower on the edge of a cliff once stood between hundreds of ships and disaster.

Cape Otway Lighthouse โ€” officially known as Cape Otway Lightstation โ€” is Australiaโ€™s modest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and offers a great half-day visit for families.

We’ve visited twice โ€” once with kids aged 6 and 8 with an overnight stay, and again when they were 13 and 15 as day visitors. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

What Is Cape Otway Lightstation?

Cape Otway Lightstation sits on a dramatic headland in the Great Otway National Park, about 45 minutes from Apollo Bay along the Great Ocean Road. Built in 1848, it’s the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia โ€” and itโ€™s not just a lighthouse. The heritage precinct includes a 19th century telegraph station, a WWII radar bunker, a whale interpretation centre, a cafรฉ and beautifully kept grounds.

The official name is Cape Otway Lightstation, but most people call it Cape Otway Lighthouse โ€” and you’ll find it listed under both names online. Either way, it’s the same place and it’s one of the most significant historical sites on the Great Ocean Road.

The lighthouse tower is currently closed for heritage restoration works, with no confirmed reopening date. There is no public access to the lighthouse interior or tower climbs at this time.

What to Do at Cape Otway Lightstation with Kids

The Lighthouse Tower

Climbing to the top of the Lighthouse Tower is the highlight of any visit. The Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 metres above Bass Strait on a cliff edge, and the views from the top are stunning on a clear day.

The lighthouse was constructed because this stretch of coast, running from Cape Otway to Port Fairy, is one of the most dangerous in the world. Around 700 ships are believed to have sunk along this coastline, many carrying migrants who had spent months at sea travelling to Australia. For them, the Cape Otway lighthouse was their first sight of land โ€” their “Beacon of Hope” โ€” after leaving Europe, Asia or North America.

The Telegraph Station

In 1859, a submarine telegraph cable was laid from Cape Otway to Tasmania โ€” a remarkable feat of technology for the time. Inside the telegraph station, kids can try deciphering Morse code messages and learn how maritime signal flags worked.

The WWII Radar Bunker

A radar station was established here during World War II to monitor enemy activity in Bass Strait. The bunker has some items inside to help tell the wartime history, and there are more views out of the remote headland.

The Whale Interpretation Centre

Between May and October, humpback and southern right whales migrate past Cape Otway. The whale interpretation centre explains how to spot 25 different whale species from the cliffs.

History Talks and Bush Tucker Talks

Daily history talks run throughout the day (generally on the hour), and are included in your entry. I recommend dropping into one of the history talks as the guideโ€™s stories will bring the site and artefacts to life.

There are also Bush Tucker talks covering Aboriginal culture and the medicinal uses of local plants. Worth checking the schedule when you arrive.

Cape Otway Lightstation

The Lightkeeper’s Cafรฉ

The onsite cafรฉ is housed in the original assistant lighthouse keeper’s cottage and is open during visitor hours. It’s famous for its scones with cream and raspberry jamโ€” make sure you stop for morning or afternoon tea.

Practical Info for Families

Address: Lighthouse Road, Cape Otway VIC 3233

Phone: +61 3 5237 9240

Opening hours: Open daily 9:30amโ€“5pm (last entry 4:30pm). Closed Christmas Day.

Cafรฉ hours: The Lightkeeper’s Cafรฉ is open daily 10amโ€“4pm.

Closed: Christmas Day

Getting there: Turn off the Great Ocean Road about 30 minutes past Apollo Bay, then drive approximately 15 minutes down Lighthouse Road to the precinct. Total drive from Apollo Bay is around 45 minutes.

Parking: Free onsite parking available.

How long to allow: We spent 3 hours on our visit โ€” we covered every location on the precinct, lingered over scones at the cafรฉ and stayed for the full history talk (close to 1 hour, but I think the guide ran over time). That’s a good benchmark if you want to do it properly. If you’re just doing a quick walk of the grounds and exterior you could get away with less, but it’d be a shame to rush it.

Mobile reception: Telstra has coverage at various points around the site. Other carriers may have limited or no signal โ€” download any maps or information before you leave Apollo Bay.

Note: You cannot see the lighthouse from the road without paying entry. Don’t make the drive down Lighthouse Road if you’re not planning to go in โ€” the lighthouse is set well back from the road.

Tips for Visiting Cape Otway Lighthouse with Kids

Do the history talk. It runs throughout the day, is included in your entry and runs for about an hour (though itโ€™s hard to know, I think our guide ran over time). It’s worth doing because the story of the shipwreck coast puts everything else in context and kids pay much more attention to the lighthouse and telegraph station once they understand why they were built.

Time your visit for whale season. If you’re visiting between May and October, build in time at the whale interpretation centre and the cliff lookouts.

Watch for koalas on the way in. Drive slowly down Lighthouse Road and scan the eucalyptus trees. Give yourself an extra 10โ€“15 minutes for the drive in to allow for koala stops.

Visit on a weekday if you can. When there are fewer people around, kids have room to run and explore without feeling rushed or crowded.

Bring food if you’re making a day of it. The cafรฉ is open daily 10amโ€“4pm and is famous for its scones, but it’s not a full lunch venue. Apollo Bay is the nearest town for a proper meal โ€” stock up before you head down Lighthouse Road as there are no other options nearby.

Staying Overnight at Cape Otway Lightstation

It’s always been my dream to stay in a lighthouse. The idea of being in a tiny cosy space, looking out into the vast ocean just holds some romantic appeal for me.

At Cape Otway Lighthouse you can’t stay overnight in the actual lighthouse, but it is one of the few locations in Australia where you can stay in a lighthouse cottage. These are the original buildings where the lighthouse keepers and other workers used to live while they tended the lighthouse.

If you’re staying overnight, a visit to the lighthouse is included in your booking cost and you can access the grounds at any time. That’s the real magic of it. Once the gates close for the day and the visitors go home, the whole precinct is yours. We stayed in the Lightkeeper’s B&B when our kids were 6 and 8, and enjoyed roaming the grounds without another person in sight, before retiring to our makeshift dinner watching the storm clouds rolling in over Bass Strait. The kids loved having the whole place to themselves โ€” exploring in the fading light, waking up early the next morning before the gates reopened to day visitors.

Note that thereโ€™s no TV reception. Mobile reception is limited to Telstra at various spots. So prepare yourself for a cosy stay with books and boardgames.

The Accommodation Options

There are three accommodation options at Cape Otway Lightstation, ranging from small B&B rooms to full self-contained houses for large groups.

Lightkeeper’s Cottage

The original Head Lightkeeper’s Cottage, built in 1857. Available as two separate options:

Head Lightkeeper’s Cottage (2 bedroom) โ€” sleeps up to 6 guests. 2 king beds (can be split into singles), 1 bunk bed, 2 fireplaces, fully equipped kitchen with oven and full-sized fridge, lounge and dining area, veranda, garden views, guest WiFi. The best option for families who want to self-cater.

Lightkeeper’s B&B (2 bedroom) โ€” sleeps up to 4 guests. 2 king beds (can be split), 1 bathroom with a beautiful clawfoot bath and a huge accessible shower. Note there is no kitchen sink or stove but there is a microwave, toaster and a full set of crockery and cutlery, so you can heat things up and make basic meals. Anything that needs rinsing gets done in the bathroom sink, and dirty dishes go in a bucket for cleaning the next day. Continental breakfast provisions are provided in the room โ€” milk, juice, cereal, bread and condiments. Guest WiFi included.

Years ago, before children, my friends and I booked out the whole Lightkeeper’s Cottage for a special weekend away. This time around, with kids in tow, we stayed in the Lightkeeper’s B&B โ€” the section of the cottage that can be closed off by a lockable door when the whole cottage isn’t booked out as one. It has its own separate entrance and works well for a small family.

Cape Otway Lightstation

Lighthouse Lodge

A renovated property with open plan lounge and kitchen, perfect for larger families or groups. Available as two options:

Lighthouse Lodge (4 bedroom) โ€” sleeps up to 8 guests. 2 king beds (can be split), 4 single beds, 1 bathroom with shower and bath, wood heater and electric heaters, fully equipped kitchen, BBQ, lounge and dining area, veranda, DVD player, guest WiFi. The best option for a large family who wants full self-catering facilities.

Lighthouse Lodge B&B (1 suite) โ€” sleeps up to 2 guests. 1 king bed, kitchenette with full fridge, microwave and toaster, continental breakfast provided, veranda, DVD player, guest WiFi. Better suited to couples than families.

Cape Otway Lightstation

Lightstation Studio

A beautifully renovated studio apartment for couples. Not ideal for families with kids.

How long should I allow for a visit?

We spent 3 hours on our visit โ€” covering every location on the precinct, stopping for scones at the cafรฉ and staying for the full 1-hour history talk. That’s a solid benchmark if you want to do it properly. A quick walk of the grounds takes less time, but it’d be a shame to rush it.

Between May and October when humpback and southern right whales migrate past the headland. The whale interpretation centre is open year-round.
