Nestled in the centre of bustling Box Hill Melbourne, and across the road from the Box Hill Hospital, you’ll find beautiful Box Hill Gardens.
The suburban oasis has always been popular and now with the Box Hill Gardens playground redevelopment, the park is even more impressive.
Box Hill Gardens Playground
Box Hill Gardens playground redevelopment has been designed to provide the growing population in the surrounding area with a modern and appealing play space highlighted with purple hues.
Climb up the stairs (or the rock climbing wall) of the tower to the tall curled slide, or exit first down the shorter slide, or fireman’s pole.
Then clamber across, up and down many metres of rope climbing equipment.

A smaller climbing structure is more suited to younger children with shorter slides, ladder and climbing wall. A bunch of talk tubes have been installed through the playground to transfer important messages to friends!
There are two flying foxes with disc pommel seats….
….rockers, spinners, swings, basket swing…
…and one popular in-ground trampoline.
There is even parkour equipment for more adventurous, older children.
I really like the landscaping of the playground too, with native bushes and plants enhancing the purple colour scheme of the playground equipment.
Once you’re done with the playground Box Hill Gardens also boasts a second play space – a multipurpose sports court and skate park.
Elements of the former Tennis Club building have been incorporated into the multipurpose sports court, which features a basketball or netball court, table tennis tables and a rebound wall.
The skate park is one big bowl and great training for little kids as the slopes are gentle.
There is ample shade and curbside seating for spectators too.
A 1km running track that circles the gardens provide further recreation opportunities, with the start and finish lines right near the multipurpose court. Adjacent to the track is a sealed path that provides all abilities access and makes for a fun scooter track – just be careful of pedestrians of course and try not to ride on the running track like Lady AB!
At the north-west of Box Hill Gardens, there is a smaller playground and a tranquil duck pond.
Another out of the ordinary feature is a small ‘xerophytic garden’. It’s two garden beds demonstrating how to landscape with plants requiring only a little water.
Toilets, barbecue and picnic facilities are all available at Box Hill Gardens, plus the culinary delights of nearby Box Hill Central and Box Hill CBD make for a picnic that’s a bit more interesting than ham sandwiches. We like the generously proportioned Chinese pancakes from Pancake Village which are under $10!
Box Hill Gardens is worth a special trip to the east of Melbourne and it’s a lovely place to spend several hours. Take a ball, a bike or scooter and your running shoes and get active!
