Lady Melville is a cutie patootie family-run cafe in a rather dour strip of Brunswick West.
The owners (who have three kids) have thought of everything when it comes to kid-friendly dining. Thereโs a back entrance via Bakers Parade which leads into a sunny courtyard and down the centre is a pram ramp complete with a grip mat.
On the fake grass under the stairs theyโve set up not just one but two toy kitchens which Lady AB had great fun with for about 30 minutes.
There are numerous high chairs available in the courtyard and inside.
Go up the steep stairs and thereโs a sheltered deck, the toilets (one of which is big enough to fit a pram), a tiny kitchen, then a cosyย room with a fireplace and succulents nesting in decorative teapots.
My favourite space was the sunny front room where coffee machine churns out Lady Melvilleโs house blend from Zest. The only drawback of the front room is that the teeny tiny tables are wall-mounted, which means theyโre squishy and awkward if youโre trying to fit your bottom, your bag,ย food, drinks and colouring-in sheets.
The all day breakfast and lunch menu covers all the usual bases, with lots for gluten-lovers including a delectable selection ofย pastries in the cabinet from Noisette.
I tried the salmon smorrebord (Danish open sandwich) with a few slices of smoked salmon, a dill cream cheese spread, radish, cucumber and capers, a bargain atย $10. I wish that it came on the traditional dark rye bread instead of sourdough, but a small quibble.
Lady AB took a break from her intense colouring-in and hoed into a ham and cheese toasty from the kids menu ($8) stuffed with oozy cheese and good quality Istra ham. I had some of the toasty and I would have been happy to eat it all myself!
The babycino ($1) was also generously proportioned and came with a smile-inducing marshmallow.
I also tried the apple and macadamia French toast jaffle ($16.50), an extravagant affair with aย spiced apple and currant mixture pressed between two slices of eggy bread. The French toast was bookended by a scoop of burnt fig gelato from Miinot Gelato and a generous dollop of marscapone. Everything was fairy-dusted with a sweet nut crumble, fresh berries and lashingsย of Canadian maple syrup. You can add bacon to the dish but why spoil the sweetness I say?
Lady Melville is a fantastic cafรฉ in Brunswick West that just happens to be extremely kid-friendly as well. The owners are parents and have thought of everything, without compromising on the high standard of food that discerning Melbourne cafรฉ-goers expect.
If youโre visiting Lady Melvilleย this week they are holding free Easter egg hunts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10am in the courtyard. No need to book, just turn up.
