HOT: Werribee Zoo Indoor Play ‘Ranger Kids’, Werribee South

Ranger Kids is the indoor play space at Werribee Open Range Zoo and combined with the outdoor play space Village Kids, a trip to the zoo has never been more fun!

Ranger Kids is similar to the excellent Keeper Kids at Melbourne Zoo but it has a greater focus on African animals, as befitting the population of the open range zoo.

Various elements that appear in Keeper Kids also appear in Ranger Kids – a vet department, an activity related to feeding animals their food, dress ups, a central area where adults can sit and keep an eye on the proceedings and a live exhibit.

Other great features of Ranger Kids include a zoo guard at the door so if your kid runs outside (as Baby 2.0 tries to do several times) there’s someone to let you know!

Second, the helicopter model is awesome! The cockpit has room for two or three kids to steer and talk into the microphone to converse with dispatch. Kids can crawl in with animals and pretend to be airlifting animals to hospital. You can even pretend to refuel the engine at the back.

Thirdly, the live exhibit of Leopard Tortoises was really engaging. Because the animals trundle around at ground level they are just the right height for little kids. Baby 2.0 is absolutely fascinated by their meanderings. In fact, the tortoises are what provoke the many escape attempts out the front door – he wants to follow the animals to their outside enclosure. I have never seen tortoises close up and I find their features really fascinating.

Ranger Kids is a great option when it’s a bit or cold at the zoo and the perfect springboard to begin your trip to the zoo or a stop off on your way out.

Just note that Ranger Kids is only open from weekdays 12.30pm to 2.30pm and weekends 10.30am to 2.30pm, whereas Werribee Open Range Zoo is open 9am-5pm.

If you’re a Melburnian I reckon Zoos Victoria offers one of the best memberships for Melbourne families and then you can visit Ranger Kids whenever you want, for however long you want!
