Rain Hayne and Shine Farmyard is a magical spot for families with young kids!
We recently spent a day here, and it’s an absolute hit with my preschoolers. Packed with hands-on activities, friendly animals, and plenty of space to explore, it’s the kind of outing that keeps everyone entertained. Here’s a rundown of our visit, along with some tips to make the most of your trip.

Fun Animal Farm Mornington Peninsula
Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard is a charming hands-on animal farm on the Mornington Peninsula, designed with families in mind.
The experience offers an up-close encounter on an authentic farm with animals, including sheep, goats, pigs, cows, donkeys, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Kids can hand-feed many of the animals, cuddle the smaller ones, and even take a ride on a pony or tractor (depending on availability).

Our Day At Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard
As we head off to Rain Hayne and Shine, the kids are so excited for a day on the farm!
Little E, my four-year-old, can’t get enough of the pony rides. She’s always been a fan of horses, so riding a pony is a dream come true for her. She is very gentle greeting the two ponies, named Hootie and Lilly.
After her ride, she spends ages in the petting area, giggling as she strokes the piglets, chickens, and baby bunnies.

Bubba D, who’s two, is in her element too. She adores the tractor ride, where we bump along the farm paths and wave at the animals. The highlight for her, though, is patting the bunnies, guinea pigs and chickens – their soft fur and feathers bring out the sweetest smiles.
Another unexpected treat is storytime. During school holidays, the farm runs extra activities like this, which are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Bubba D sits mesmerised, listening to farm-themed tales while cuddling a guinea pig. It’s heart-melting to see.

Family-Friendly Features at Rain Hayne and Shine
One of the things I appreciate most about Rain Hayne and Shine is how well it caters to families.
The farmyard isn’t overly commercialised, which gives it a relaxed and authentic feel. There’s plenty of room for little ones to roam safely, with lots of shaded picnic tables where parents can take a breather.
The playground is another big hit. After all the excitement of feeding and patting animals, the kids have a blast climbing, sliding, and swinging. It’s a great spot to wind down before heading home.
For parents, it’s worth noting that while there’s a kiosk on-site, it’s limited to drinks and some basic snacks like cookies. Bringing your own lunch or snacks is a good idea, especially since there are plenty of picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a bite.

Tips for Your Visit to Rain Hayne and Shine
- Visit during school holidays: Extra activities like storytime and special events are only available during school breaks, making it an ideal time to go.
- Bring snacks and lunch: The kiosk offers only basic snacks (including coffee), so pack a picnic. There’s plenty of seating to enjoy a family meal.
- Prepare for muddy fun: Gumboots are a must, especially after rainy days. It’s a farm, after all!
- Playground perks: The on-site playground is great for pre-school kids to burn off energy and adds to the fun.

- Budget for extras: Pony rides and animal food are an additional cost to the entry fee, so bring along some extra cash if your little ones want the full experience.
- Check out Little Piggies Playgroup: If you’re local or visit often, this weekly group is perfect for kids aged 1-5 years. It’s a lovely way to introduce young children to farm life.
- Consider an annual pass: For families who live nearby or plan to visit multiple times, an annual pass is a great way to save money.
- Plan your timing: The farm is open daily from Saturday to Wednesday, 10am to 4pm (last entry at 3pm), and every day during school and public holidays (except Christmas Day). Be sure to double-check hours before heading out.

What to Expect
Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard is a working farm, so it’s delightfully rustic and authentic.
You’ll find animals roaming around paddocks, small enclosures where kids can interact with animals up close, and plenty of photo opportunities.
The staff are friendly and very laid back. It’s clear they love the animals.

While the setup is simple, it’s packed with charm and offers an experience you won’t find at larger, more commercial attractions.
Animal lovers will be thrilled by the variety of creatures to meet, including sheep, goats, pigs, cows, donkeys, ponies, cockatoos, turtles, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Kids can hand-feed some of the animals, under supervision, which always sparks a sense of wonder.
For little ones who might be nervous, the smaller animals, like bunnies and guinea pigs, are a fantastic introduction to animal handling.

Why We’ll Be Back
Our day at Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard was a resounding success. It’s the kind of place that sparks joy and curiosity in young children, letting them experience the magic of animals in a safe and welcoming environment.
My kids have already asked when we can go back – and honestly, I can’t wait either!
