The Port of Echuca is one of regional Victoria’s best family day trips โ and a paddle steamer cruise on the Murray River is the highlight most kids will talk about for weeks. This guide covers everything you need to know: what’s at the Port itself, which cruise operators run from Echuca, how they compare, and which one is right for your family.

What Is the Port of Echuca?
The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s, when it was the third largest port in Australia outside Sydney and Melbourne. That’s not tourism spin โ you feel it when you walk through the precinct. The red gum wharf, the steam sheds, the sawmill reconstruction โ it all holds together in a way that doesn’t feel like a theme park.
My kids were completely absorbed by it. The steam engines alone were a hit (loud, clanky, brilliant). Plan at least half a day here, and longer if you add a cruise.

The Port Precinct: Worth Doing Before or After Your Cruise
The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is your starting point. Entry is free and includes access to the Port Museum, wharf walk, steam-powered exhibits and the historic railway siding.
As you head through, youโll access the Discovery Centre, the PS Success restoration project and shipwrighting display, steam traction engines, the Evans Sawmill, and working steam pumps. There’s a lot to see, and it’s all included โ which is great value given how much time you can spend in there.
The Discovery Centre includes a Lego hunt for kids โ they search the museum displays for hidden Lego pieces, and earn a lollipop when they’ve found them all.
Ticketed guided tours run most days at 11.30am and 1.30pm. I’d strongly recommend the wharf tour if your kids are school age โ the guides are knowledgeable and the commentary makes the whole visit land differently. There’s also a Port After Dark tour running several nights a week, though that one’s better suited to older kids and adults.
Practical info:
- Address: 74 Murray Esplanade, Echuca
- Phone: (03) 5481 0500
- Free entry to the precinct; ticketed guided tours and paddle steamer cruises are extra
- Toilets on site
- Accessible for prams and wheelchairs (contact them ahead of time to confirm specifics)
- Pets welcome in the outdoor precinct

Paddle Steamers in Echuca: Which Cruise Is Right for Your Family?
There are two main operators running cruise experiences from Echuca that are well suited to families: Port of Echuca / Echuca Paddlesteamers (operating out of the Discovery Centre at 74 Murray Esplanade) and Murray River Paddlesteamers (57 Murray Esplanade, just up the road). Both run one-hour cruises along the Murray. Both are good.
Here’s how they compare.
Port of Echuca Paddlesteamers
Three vessels, one operator, same one-hour format
The Port of Echuca runs three historic vessels: the PS Pevensey, the PS Adelaide and the PS Alexander Arbuthnot. All offer one-hour cruises departing from the Echuca Wharf.
The one-hour cruise includes onboard commentary about the history of the paddle steamer trade and the Echuca Wharf, plus a kiosk for light refreshments and snacks.
PS Pevensey is the one currently cruising daily. TV fans might recognise it as the PS Philadelphia from the Australian series All the Rivers Run, which was filmed in Echuca. Kids who’ve seen the show love spotting it. You can explore the cabins and chat with the engineer or skipper.
PS Adelaide is currently out of service but returning soon. At 160 years old, it’s the world’s oldest operating wooden-hulled paddle steamer โ and if it’s running when you visit, that alone makes it worth choosing.
PS Alexander Arbuthnot runs less regularly. Check the website before booking.
Cruise times (PS Pevensey): Departures run daily at 10.15am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.45pm, with additional departures sometimes available during school holidays and public holidays.
Prices:
Adult $35 | Concession $32 | Student (14โ18) $29 | Child under 13 varies โ check current pricing | Family (1 adult + up to 4 children) $70 | Family (2 adults + up to 4 children) $90 | Companion/carer free | Pets free.
Booking tip: Physical tickets must be collected from the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. Collect them at least 15 minutes before your departure time or you’ll miss the boat. The paddlesteamers are pet friendly โ dogs must stay on a short leash at the bow.
Best for: Families who want the historic precinct experience alongside the cruise. Combine it with the wharf walk and museum for a full day out.

Murray River Paddlesteamers โ PS Canberra
The one-hour classic, with a kids’ skipper certificate
Murray River Paddlesteamers operates from 57 Murray Esplanade (just a short walk from the Discovery Centre). Their main day cruise option for families runs on the PS Canberra, a wooden vessel with capacity for 100 passengers, built in 1912.
Children can earn a skipper’s certificate for steering the boat with the skipper โ a massive hit with kids.
Prices:
Adult $35 | Concession $32 | Student (15โ18) $29 | Child (4โ14) $15 | Under 4 free | Family (2 adults + up to 4 children) $90 | Family (1 adult + up to 3 children) $70.
The TwistED Steamer Family Deal is worth checking out โ it’s a combined PS Canberra cruise and entry to the TwistED Science Centre in Echuca, which is a solid science museum great for kids aged roughly 5 and up. Good value if you’re planning a full day and want to keep the momentum going.
Best for: Families where kids want to steer the boat. Also good if you’re combining with a visit to TwistED Science.

Overnight Cruises on the Murray: PS Emmylou and PS Australian Star
If one hour on the river isn’t enough, there are two overnight paddle steamer options departing from Echuca. The PS Emmylou takes just 16 passengers across 8 cabins for an intimate 3 or 4-night experience, with riverside BBQ dinners, winery visits and campfire evenings included. The newer PS Australian Star launched in 2026 and runs the same itineraries with more luxurious facilities โ 19 staterooms with ensuites, air-conditioning and a proper dining room.
Both are best suited to adults or families with teenagers. Children 15 and over are welcome at adult prices โ which gives you a sense of the pace and vibe on board. Think slow travel, good food, and watching kangaroos from the deck at dusk. For the right family, it’s a genuinely special trip. For families with younger kids, stick to the one-hour cruise options above.
Best for: Families with older kids or teenagers who’d enjoy multi-day slow travel, or as a future trip without the little ones. Not recommended as a day-trip option for families with young children unless you’re visiting in December or January when the one-hour cruise runs.

Which Cruise Should You Book?
Both operators run great one-hour cruises, and the experience on the water is similar โ you’re gliding along the Murray, watching gum trees slide past, listening to commentary about river life in the 1800s. The real differences come down to what matters most to your family.
Choose Port of Echuca (PS Pevensey) if:
- You want to combine the cruise with the historic wharf precinct
- Your kids are All the Rivers Run fans or history-interested
- You have a dog to bring along
- You’re doing the guided tour as well
Choose Murray River Paddlesteamers (PS Canberra) if:
- Your kids want to actually steer the boat and get a certificate
- You’re combining with TwistED Science Centre
- You want the slightly larger vessel with more room to move
Both are suitable from around age 3 upwards, though toddlers will need to be held or kept close near the railings. Kids 5 and up generally get the most out of the commentary and exploring the boat.

What Parents Need to Know
Getting there: Echuca is about 2.5 hours from Melbourne. Most families drive. Parking is available along Murray Esplanade and nearby streets โ it fills up quickly on weekends and in school holidays, so arrive early.
How long to allow: A one-hour cruise plus the Port precinct easily takes three to four hours. Add lunch on High Street, and you’ve got a full day.
Food: Both operators have snack kiosks on board. For a proper meal, Echuca’s High Street has good cafรฉs and restaurants โ plenty of family-friendly options within walking distance of the wharf.
Toilets: Available at the Discovery Centre precinct.
Pram access: The wharf itself has uneven surfaces in places โ manageable with a pram, but worth knowing.
Booking: Book online in advance, especially during school holidays and weekends. Cruises do sell out.
Weather: There’s limited shade on the top deck of most vessels. Hats and sunscreen are non-negotiable in warmer months. Most boats have a covered lower deck if it’s raining.

Our Experience
We did the PS Pevensey cruise on a warm weekday morning and it was one of the highlights of our Echuca trip. My kids were transfixed by the engine room โ the smell of hot oil and the rhythmic thud of the paddle wheel is something you don’t get anywhere else.
The skipper’s commentary was engaging, and we spent a solid chunk of the cruise leaning over the rail watching the paddle wheel churn. The Murray River scenery is calm and beautiful, with river red gums leaning low over the water and the odd heron standing still in the shallows.
After our cruise and museum visit, we stopped at the Hopwood Gardens Playground before finding a nice spot for dinner on High Street in walking distance.

Is It Worth Visiting with Kids?
Yes, absolutely. The Port of Echuca is one of the best family history experiences in regional Victoria, and a paddle steamer cruise is the kind of thing kids remember.
Best ages: 4 and up for the full experience. Toddlers will enjoy it but won’t follow the commentary.
Time required: One day minimum; two to three days recommended.
Value: Very good. The free precinct entry means you can spend several hours before you even step on a boat.
