American Express Openair Cinemas is one of my favourite outdoor cinemas in Melbourne. It’s small, friendly and in a unique setting with great food and drinks. Clearly, other Melburnians love it too as it’s doubling down on its MCG Yarra Park season with a second season in St Kilda. Just in time for summer!
The popular beach-front experience returns to South Beach reserve, next to St Kilda Sea Baths from Friday 22 November 2019. These photos are from their MCG Yarra Park location, but the experience should be much the same…except by the sea!
The month-long season kicks off with a special preview screening of Knives Out (out in cinemas Thursday 28 November). The rest of the program features a mix of recent box office hits, new releases and old favourites until Friday 20 December. Family-friendly films include The Lion King, Abominable and Elf.
Moviegoers are free to take a picnic (no glass) and dogs are welcome at all times.

If you don’t want to self-cater then Ladro are bringing a food truck slinging wood-fired pizzas, calamari and arancini balls. I highly recommend the seafood pizza!
Giesen Wines, 4Pines beer, PIMMS and Enjoy Water are providing the drinks. Every Wednesday, guests can sample the full range of Giesen Wines (up to 8 different varieties) before settling in for the film.
On the weekends there is live music and DJ performances before the main feature which starts at sunset.
Premium ticket holders for the American Express Lounge, Prime Video Lounge and Kathmandu Korner receive their own bean bag and blanket, seat service, treats and other special offers.
You can also hire a lounger and blanket online or onsite. If your budget allows I reckon these are worth the money, as they will provide you with a more comfortable film-watching experience. And we all know that Melbourne weather can be cray-cray so having a blanket, even in summer, is essential!
American Express Openair Cinemas is a unique cinema-going experience with a great selection of films in a stunning setting. See you at the movies!
