HOT: One for the Crow, Maidstone

One for the Crowย a plant-based cafe in Maidstone and possibly the first vegan-friendly cafe with a full kitchen in Melbourneโ€™s inner west.

Maidstone locals Steph and Taze have transformed a sleepy suburban shopfront into a green oasis for plant-loving folk.

One for the Crowโ€™s menu focuses on seasonal and wholesome food that happens to be vegetarian/vegan friendly. You certainly donโ€™t have to be vegetarian or vegan to eat there – I spot cheese toasties in the cupboard and you can request cowโ€™s milk in your coffee. But you won’t have to pay extra to drink soy, almond or coconut milk in your Allpressย coffee.

The soba noodle bowl ($16) is a big hit, with good reason. Itโ€™s a bowl full of soy marinated tofu, cruciferous vegetables, crunchy bean sprouts, baby spinach and garnished with pickled carrot and daikon. Note the tahini-miso dressing is quite subtle so if you can withstand the heat give everything a generous squirt of sriracha.

The waffles come with housemade not-tella, a grainy cocoa/nut paste, soy ice cream, caramelised banana and maple syrup ($16). It’s a decadent dish that will win over the sweet tooths and the portion is generous.

The glass cabinet contains a daily salad, fresh sandwiches and pies and baked goods from Crumbs Organic Bakehouse.

For families there are several high chairs and a few books with some discussion about maybe some toys – but for the moment safer to BYO. The two individual toilet stalls won’t fit in a pram, but the corridor that fronts the toilets will let you wheel one in easily.

The cafe fronts onto the car parking and a quiet residential street, so older kids may be safe to hang out there. Itโ€™s just a short walk to the Dobsons Reserve playground, Rogers Reserve playground and Maidstone Community Centre.

And finally, the reason for the name? Itโ€™s a traditional farming proverb about sowing seeds that Steph and Taze particularly like:ย โ€˜one for the mouse, one for the crow, one to rot, one to growโ€™.

For other Maidstone cafes try Jack B Nimble.
