Why We Love MoPA

MoPA is bright, interactive, exciting, and packed with opportunities to learn through play.

I visit with my two kids, aged 3 and 5, and we barely scratch the surface in our two-hour session. There is just so much to see and do โ€” weโ€™ll definitely be back soon for round two!

Founders Tom Mahon and Billie Georgieff โ€“ the husband-and-wife duo behind the museum โ€“ created it around the idea of play-based learning, creative exploration, and turning physical play into art.

Every detail has been carefully designed by a team of play experts, with hands-on exhibits and installations.

What to Expect at Museum of Play and Art Nunwading

The MoPA team have taken all that they’ve learnt from the MoPA Geelong, MoPA Thomastown, and MoPA Sandringham sites to create a world-class experience for families with kids 1-7 years.

Two hours flies by in a blur of colour, creativity, and giggles.

This version of MoPA Melbourne children’s museum features some of MoPA’s most popular exhibits (sometimes with a different twist), plus some entirely new experiences.

What’s New at Museum of Play and Art Nunwading

One of our instant favourites is the new water play area โ€” complete with rubber duckies bobbing around and plenty of splash-free fun. Itโ€™s cleverly designed so kids can experiment with cause and effect without getting drenched (which, letโ€™s be honest, is a win for everyone).

The sound and lights rooms are a big hit too. My 3-year-old is mesmerised by the shifting colours and music, while my 5-year-old loves figuring out how their movements change the lights. Itโ€™s a brilliant mix of sensory play and science discovery.

Next, we stumble across a dress-up room with a dance-lesson screen โ€” and letโ€™s just say itโ€™s a crowd-pleaser. Watching my two twirl around in costumes while copying the moves on screen is pure joy.

If your kids have energy to burn (and whose donโ€™t?), make a beeline for the giant play boxes. Theyโ€™re packed with playground classics like trampolines, monkey bars, climbing ropes and even a flying fox. Itโ€™s the perfect spot to let them climb, bounce, and swing to their heartsโ€™ content.

Museum of Play and Art Nunwading Review

When you need a breather, grab a seat nearby and let your little ones pause for a creative reset at one of the digital drawing and colouring-in screens.

Mine could spend ages there sketching and experimenting with colours.

For families with babies and toddlers, the soft play area for under 2s is a game-changer. Itโ€™s safely sectioned off from the hustle and bustle, giving the littlest visitors space to explore without being trampled by enthusiastic big kids.

Of course, MoPA regulars will spot some beloved favourites making a return โ€” the iconic multilevel cityscape (perfect for tunnelling adventures), the VW Beetle painting zone, and the ball chutes galore that keep kids captivated for ages.

My two race between them with the same excitement as our very first MoPA experience.

Museum of Play and Art Nunwading Facilities

If you get hungry or thirsty during your visit to MoPA Nunwading there is an onsite cafe with great visibility of the cityscape in particular.

It serves coffee, sandwiches, snacks and caters for different dietary requirements, including halal.

There are disabled toilets, privacy hubs for breastfeeding mums (or just if you need a quiet break) and of course there are spacious toilets and change facilities.

Getting There & Parking

Youโ€™ll find MoPA Nunawading inside Homemaker HQ, 372 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading โ€” just look for the bright signage and follow the giggles! There are more than 300 shared on-site car spaces, so parking is easy even on busy days.

We visit on a rainy morning and I’m especially grateful for the undercover car park, which offers direct, weatherproof access to the Museum on Level 1. If you can, thatโ€™s definitely the spot to aim for โ€” itโ€™s safe, close, and makes wrangling little ones and bags a whole lot simpler.
