Montrose Community Playground is an imaginative community-built playground set amongst the leafy Dandenong Ranges. The spectacular Montrose playground is located within Montrose Recreation Reserve which also contains sports ovals, sports pavilion, open space, bushland areas, tennis courts and netball courts.
It’s well worth a special trip as it’s large enough to entertain little and big kids for hours and has facilities such as picnic shelters, barbecues and public toilets.
It also contains child-sized replicas of recognisable landmarks of the township of Montrose.
In the little play village you’ll find an adorable library cubby filled with recognisable book covers and fictional characters..
…lots of peeping windows from within the facade of the chocolate shop, bakery, hairdresser and butcher…
…a little fire engine…
…plus the essential utilities – the bank and the post office.

Other play equipment includes an extensive ramp with slides, poles, ladders and climbing equipment coming out of it.
At one of the ramp there is a high rope bridge leading to a gorgeous mural of the Australian bush – a great photo opportunity.
There are two high pyramid rope climbing frames – one which spins and one which is static.
For younger kids there is a smaller climbing fort with shorter slides, poles, a tunnel and climbing equipment.
The kids particularly love the double roundabout swing though there are traditional swings and nest swings too.
The playground is surrounded by a bushy area (we even spot kookaburras) but the trees only provide a little shade in summer. It can get very cool in winter.
A unique benefit of the playground is that it’s next door to the Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates! You can easily walk to the chocolate shop via a sensory nature garden on the edge of the playground, making it feel like an adventure from ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.
Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates sells handmade chocolates as well as offering cakes and sweets in the adjoining indoor cafe and outdoor garden area.
If you’re looking for a park in Montrose then the combination of Montrose Community Playground and Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates makes for an appealing day trip for families.
