HOT: LEGO Store, Westfield Doncaster
Big and little LEGO fans have you heard the news?? Westfield Doncaster shopping centre is the home of Melbourne's first certified LEGO store and it's BONKERS!
The standalone Melbourne LEGO store stocks popular LEGO sets from the iconic toy company's extensive range – including Harry Potter, Star Wars, LEGO City, DUPLO and Friends TV show (sold out!) just to name a few.
It also has exclusive, coveted and hard-to-find sets such as the UCS Star Destroyer, the Disney castle, Disney train and the annual Christmas set.
As we are heading to London for Christmas this year we are particularly enamoured of the London Routemaster bus going to ‘Brickston' LOL!
The Doncaster LEGO store also has interactive elements including a small play area with low play tables…
….LEGO 3D brick models for the perfect selfie…

….a ‘Who are you' scanner to find out which LEGO minifig you are…
…..a make-your-own minifig station where you can customise three minifigures for $19.99…..
…and an augmented reality screen where you can hold a LEGO set and see it assembled and come to life (we couldn't get it working on our set but we did see other kids' have a go!).
And of course, you can't go past the colourful Pick-a-brick wall, with an irresistible array of pieces for all your building needs. To fill a small Pick-a-brick cup is $14.95, a large one is $29.95.
I also like the specific ‘Melbourne' elements they've incorporated into the Melbourne LEGO store fitout, including the mosaic inspired by Melbourne's trams and the 3D models of two AFL footy players taking a mark in the store window.
While the LEGO store is busy (we visit on a Sunday) it's not as hectic as I expect. It is a delightful retail experience, with lots of ooh and aah moments as you are immersed in all things LEGO. I am surprised that there are no or very short lines for the checkout, and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
A good time to visit is every month when the store hosts free in-store LEGO mini-builds! The workshops are children aged 6 to 14, who are guided by a LEGO Certified Stores employee to build the mini-model as part of a 15 to 20-minute workshop. Kids can play, build and bring home with them a new themed mini model! Bookings for each month open on the 1st of the previous month and are announced on the LEGO Store social channels.
The Doncaster LEGO store is situated on Level 1 of Westfield Doncaster, in prime position opposite the Apple Store and close to the cute children's play area for littlies outside Big W. The closest car park is the ‘Blue' carpark.
If you don't live near Westfield Doncaster, don't despair. Alceon Group, who own the rights to LEGO Certified Stores in Australian and New Zealand, are continuing to expand to more sites around the country.
