HOT: Hutch & Co, 251 Main Street, Lilydale

Lilydale may be the end of the train line but you can still find a hub of inner city cafe cool at Hutch & Co. The owners also run Little Hugh in Nunawading.

Hutch & Co is located on Lilydale’s main street, a highlight amongst the unremarkable strip shops. In the 1800s the spot was an ironmongers known as Hutchinson’s.

Now you’ll find a modern cafe designed with blonde wood, polished concrete, black and white metal and pendant lights with spots of greenery (In fact it was shortlisted for Best Cafe Design in 2016).

There’s separated enclosed wood-panelled courtyard at the back. If you are visiting with kids it’s worth asking to be seated in that area as you’ll have more room to roam and not disturb other diners.

I try the cheese and potato waffles and LOVE the combination of meaty mushrooms and piquant chilli jam adorning the hefty waffle ($15). I ask for avocado in place of the poached egg and it was done with no quibbles.

For dessert I have the custard soaked French toast, which consists of two large hunks of toast surrounded by bright berries, almond mascarpone, and maple syrup ($17). I find the toast a bit too egg-soaked for my liking – the bread is almost dissolved – so I appreciate the crisp creme-brulee style crust coating the outside.

Hutch & Co roast their own coffee using specialty beans.

For families there are high chairs, a disabled toilet with pram access (no change table) and small kids menu. The kids ham and cheese toasties are substantial and cost $7.

There are no toys but the staff are happy to provide a piece of paper and pen for our amusement.

Given the number of filled tables on a weekday lunch Hutch & Co obviously has a reputation for excellent food and coffee. It’s my go-to when I’m in the area.

While you’re in Lilydale explore two great playgrounds – Melba Park and Lillydale Lake.
