Percy and Percy is a Bendigo cafe that has transformed a former grocer in a quiet residential area into a delightful neighbourhood cafe. Itโs a labour of love for the owners Elisha Jeffrey and Dan Bahn and their staff are like family.
The cafe is spacious, with a main dining room, a secluded private meeting room, streetside bar seating and outdoor courtyard.
On sunny days you can even lounge on the grassy strip outside the cafe with cushions and rugs.
There are references to the siteโs heritage everywhere, with a 50s ration line wallpapered behind the counter and Percy Wattsโ old delivery van emblazoned on their latte cups.
You can also buy gourmet provisions, tempting sweets from Castlemaineโs Peddling Pastry and there are plans to develop a deli/grocery area selling cheeses and meats.

The menu is comfort food done with an imaginative twist. The must-try dish is the cookies and cream hot cake ($19). It comes with an explanation โplease allow 15 minutes, itโs worth the waitโ and yes I agree!
The hotcake is essentially one big cake in a pan! Chocolate cookie crumbs are scattered throughout the batter and sprinkled on top, along with a dollop of thick double cream and a handful of berries. ย
My Spanish poached eggs ($18.50) are served in a ramekin filled with chorizo and beans in a sofrito sauce and with shaved manchego stretching its goodness over the top.
Dr Martyโs Crumpets are served with an adorable jar of Bonne Maman strawberry jam and a tiny pot of honey ($7.50). The kids menu has basic items including cereal ($5.50), toasties ($7.50) and bacon and egg on toast ($10).
Coffee is made using beans from CoffeeBasics which is roasted in Castlemaine but the milk is slightly burnt in the flat white so itโs only passable this time.
Percy and Percy is a warm and welcoming place for everyone, whether you have kids or not. The sprawling building means that itโs like visiting your chef friendโs house, with lots of room to explore and great food on the table. Put it on your list next time youโre visiting Bendigo!
