If you haven’t been to the NGV’s blockbuster exhibition Monetโ€™s Gardenย then you only have until Sunday 8 September to do so.

I don’t think the exhibition is particularly kid-friendly, especially for toddlers or if you’re pushing a pram. But if you do visit with little ones and need a food stop then I recommend the Gallery Kitchen.

The Gallery Kitchenย is the cheapest, most casual of the gallery’s eateries and its menu is currently French themed in keeping with the exhibition. The cafe has also been styled as a replica of Monet’s blue tiled kitchen as you’ll see in the panoramic video screening at the end of the exhibition.

The food is pretty simple fare – sandwiches, soups, pasta, salad, pies, sweets and pastries – most of which would be suitable for share with kids. They also have $2 babycinos and a Kids Lunch Box which is good value. For $8 you get a ham and cheese or vegemite and cheese sandwich, a gingerbread man, a box of sultanas and an apple juice. It’s not as healthy as I’d like – the bread is crustless white bread and the other items are all various forms of sugar – but it’s not too bad for a treat and at least all the items are individually wrapped so you can convince your kids to finish the sandwich before you’ll open the gingerbread man!

Lady AB loved toting around her little lunchbox and lovingly repacked her gingerbread and sultanas into it after lunch and refused to relinquish it.

As a family we like to go to events at the Arts Centre, Spiegeltent or Melbourne Recital Centre and I thinkย the Gallery Kitchenย is a good place to take the kids for lunch if you’re in the vicinity even if you’re not planning to visit the gallery.
