HOT: Chapter Too, Shop 3, 110 Canterbury Rd, Heathmont

I donโ€™t get out to the Outer East suburbs very much but when I went visiting it was great to discover a local child-friendly cafe in Heathmont called Chapter Too.

The cafe was spacious with plenty of room for prams as well as numerous high chairs. As we had booked they had already set us up on a big spacious table by the window and set out plastic cups for the kids. The window is prime position as the space is cavernous so I imagine it can feel a bit lonely up the back – though there is a neat wall cladding made with books and a mural of bird and trees.

Chapter Tooโ€™s menu featured classic cafe standards, healing generously proportioned and nicely presented. The kids menu included items such as toast and spreads ($5) to pikelets with ice cream ($8), sale with the ice cream neatly served in a plastic takeaway tub so that it doesnโ€™t melt everywhere across the plate (and fingers and faces).

The kids were engaged by the tins of pencils and sheets of colouring in while the adults dug into their lunch.

B had the corn fritters with labne, bacon, rocket and kasundi ($17) which was so enormous the tower threatened to topple with the slice of the knife.

I tried the โ€˜The Godfatherโ€™ with lamb sausage, bacon and two fried eggs ($21), a hangover breakfast which was good without being wow. The highlight was actually the smokey, juicy grilled truss tomatoes.

For dessert we tried a lemon meringue and pecan tart from the cabinet, sourced daily from a wholesale bakery in Bayswater. Very reasonably priced at $5 each but to be honest not particularly special, with rather chalky pastry and overly sweet filling.

B, who is a regular at Chapter Too, told me that sheโ€™s there often and so it seems to be a reliable child-friendly option for locals. Itโ€™s a strictly daytime venue but licensed too!
