Gumbuya World: A Full-Day Theme Park for Families

If youโ€™re searching for a big day out where the kids stay happy and you donโ€™t feel rushed, Gumbuya World is one of those places where you can arrive early, stay all day, and still feel like you didnโ€™t miss anything.

Here are our tips for making the most of your day at Gumbuya World, one of the best Melbourne amusement parks in our view.

Gumbuya World

Why Families choose Gumbuya World

We often get asked how Gumbuya World compares to other amusement parks in Victoria that families regularly visit, particularly in summer eg Adventure Park Geelong, Funfields Whittlesea, Luna Park Melbourne.

The big difference here is variety. When parents compare amusement parks in Melbourne, many like having rides, animals, and water in one ticket.

Gumbuya World

Most Melbourne amusement parks focus on one type of fun. At Gumbuya World you get dry rides, epic water play, animals, and open space in one spot.

That means kids can move between rides, water, and wildlife without leaving the park. Itโ€™s ideal if you have kids with different interests or ages. Everyone gets something they enjoy without constant compromise.

That flexibility is gold when youโ€™re planning a day out with kids!

This park suits families who want choice and space.

Four themed areas to suit different ages

Oasis Springs Water Park

Oasis Springs is a seasonal water park and typically operates from November until April.

Obviously it is a hit on warm days and we usually make a beeline straight here as soon as gates open at 10am.

Thereโ€™s a wave pool, 8 epic water slides, an extensive splash park (with more water slides) for younger children, a 300 metre Lazy River and splash zones designed for littlies.

Similar to regulations in Victorian public pools, parents need to hop in the pools and closely supervise kids 10 and under, with kids 5 and under within armโ€™s reach.

If kids are 10+ years old they are free to roam around on their own safely.

โ€‹โ€‹Before arriving, check the Height Guide to see which attractions, rides, and water slides are suitable for your group.

Oasis Springs is also where we like to set up a home base. There are free lounge chairs throughout the water play area, and most people just claim a spot by dropping their towel and belongings on a lounge chair.

Our preference for home base is near the Swim Shack kiosk, as itโ€™s shaded for most of the day with easy access to lockers, toilets and change rooms.

There are also bookable picnic tables and chairs and day beds in that area – which may be available for use if no one has booked them.

When we arrive we check on the website as to what sites are already booked on the day, then take over a picnic table and chairs or a day bed thatโ€™s not been booked already. That strategy has worked for us every year!

Outback Explorers rides

This section works well for preschool and primary school kids.

Rides are fun without being scary. Kids can generally hop on and off without long waits, which keeps energy levels steady.

Families comparing theme parks in Melbourne often say this area feels less overwhelming for younger kids.

Gumbuya World

Oz Adventure rides

This is where older kids and tweens head.

The rides are faster and bigger, perfect for confident riders. It works well if you have siblings of different ages and want to split up for a bit.

Gumbuya World

Wildlife Trail

The Wildlife Trail gives everyone a breather from rides.

Kids can see kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and more. Paths are wide and easy for prams.

Itโ€™s a nice bonus if your child loves animals and youโ€™d normally plan a separate animal farm visit.

Gumbuya World ticket prices and value for money

Ticket prices change depending on season and age.

Itโ€™s always smart to check Gumbuya Park prices online before you go. This helps you pick the best day and budget properly.

There are numerous add-ons that you can add to your entry ticket. Weโ€™ve found the only one thatโ€™s useful for us is the Express Q for express entry to water slides when the day is hot ie the water park is very popular.

Many families find that a full-day at Gumbuya World offers better value than trying to squeeze everything into several visits to different locations.

If you plan to visit three or more times, the Gumbuya World Annual Pass offers the best discount on entry, plus discounts on other experiences and priority entry.

Gumbuya World Food options

You cannot bring your own food or drinks unless it is water, fruit, baby food or food that you need to bring because of allergies.

Youโ€™ll find food outlets inside the park with kid-friendly meals. Think easy options that donโ€™t slow the day down like chicken nuggets and chips.

Note the lines for hot food can get long in peak times (eg the 12 midday rush) so either eat a bit early or a bit later, or opt for the cold grab-and-go options such as sushi and salads. On our last visit a medium sized tub of premade chicken pesto pasta salad cost $14.50.

Water refill stations are available, so bring drink bottles.

What to pack for a smooth day

Packing well makes the day easier. After many years visiting Gumbuya World in summer, hereโ€™s our packing list for each person:

  • Wear bathers underneath your clothes so you can get straight into the water
  • Thick large towel – as soon as you get out of the water it can get cold
  • Water resistant sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimming goggles (you canโ€™t use on water slides)
  • A spare change of clothes
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables / food and drinks catering for allergy dietary requirements
  • Water bottles
  • Baby food (if needed)
  • Comfortable shoes eg sneakers because you may walk a lot.
  • Slides or thongs for walking around Oasis Springs, in case the ground is hot.
  • Snacks to keep in your car for the car ride home

A small backpack works better than a large bag, especially if you plan to move between areas.

As I am often responsible for minding everyoneโ€™s belongings at home base, I always bring a book and a device with noise cancelling headphones to while away the hours (there is free wifi, but it seems to switch off around 3-4pm).

Is Gumbuya World suitable for toddlers?

Yes. And thatโ€™s a big reason families return.

There are gentle rides, shallow water play areas, and plenty of space for breaks. Parents donโ€™t feel stuck waiting while older kids ride everything.

If youโ€™re looking at fun parks Victorian families recommend for toddlers, this one rates highly.

Gumbuya World

How long do families usually stay?

Plan for most of the day. In summer the park opens 10am-6pm and we aim to arrive by 9:45am.

Arrive early and start with rides while lines are shorter. If you have little ones then save water play for later in the day, because you can enjoy the massive splash park, lazy river and wave pool without queueing.

Gumbuya World

If the water park is the main attraction for your family (and you have older kids) then head straight to the thrill water slides Taipan and Boomerango and the Red Belly Racer as they tend to have the longest lines.

Most families spend 5+ hours at the park. Trying to rush through leads to tired kids and short tempers.

As our kids have become teenagers we have spent the whole 8 hours at the park.

Take breaks in the Wildlife Trail to reset energy levels. Use lockers for wet clothes if needed.

Compared with other amusement parks in Victoria, this park rewards a slower pace.

Getting there and parking

Gumbuya World is about a straightforward 50-minute drive from Melbourneโ€™s CBD.

Free parking is onsite and easy to manage. Arriving early helps you get a good parking spot, beat entry lines and settle in before crowds build. There are paid parking spots as well but weโ€™ve never found the need for them.

Is it worth visiting more than once?

For many families, yes.

Younger kids enjoy the animals and water play. As kids grow, they start enjoying the bigger rides more and you can relax at home base while they roam the park on their own.

Thatโ€™s why it stands out among Melbourne amusement parks that families return to over several years.

If you plan to visit three or more times in 12 months, the Gumbuya World Annual Pass offers the best discount on entry, plus discounts on other experiences and priority entry.

Gumbuya World

If youโ€™re planning a family outing and want a park that works for toddlers through to tweens, Gumbuya World makes planning easier. Itโ€™s flexible, family-focused, and designed for long, happy days out.
