Faradayโs Cage is an enclosure used to block electric fields – as well as a family friendly yet hip warehouse cafe and bakery in Fitzroy.
The business is owned by a John Petrou, a former electrical engineer, and his wife and they have turned his passion for baking into their new project.
Faradayโs Cage is a little off the beaten track of Brunswick Street, Smith Street/Johnston Street and as such may be a bit harder to find – which means theย crowds haven’t got to it and there’s plenty of room for prams!

One section of the warehouse is the kitchen where you can see the handmade sourdough loaves, baked goods and pastries being freshly baked daily. If you want extra bread with your meal, you just have to ask for it and itโs free.
As I find it difficult to decide I go straight to the dish with the most variety, the Faraday Platter ($23). It is an enormous board, really suitable for two people, containing a granola yoghurt pot, boiled egg, rillettes, smoked salmon, pickle, chorizo croquettes and dip with baguette.
We also share a buttermilk hotcake ($18), a fluffy pan-cooked hot cake studded with crunchy macadamia praline pieces and topped with mascarpone and fresh berries.
For kids there is a great value Kids Breakfast – $8 for an egg, bacon, toast and freshly squeezed orange juice or babycino.ย
Other family friendly facilities include high chairs, a large bathroom and a heated courtyard that opens out into a quiet laneway. If you have a pram I recommend entering via the back courtyard on Chapel St rather than bumping down the stairs from the main entrance on Gore St.
Faradayโs Cage is a quiet achieverย in Fitzroy. Seek it out for its fantastic, reasonably priced breakfasts, fresh baked goods, friendly service and a cosy laneway courtyard.
