The Art of Dawdling at The Abbotsford Convent – Japanese ‘Urban Listening’

Have you ever stopped to listen to the sounds around you? This winter, families are invited to experience a unique self-guided outdoor adventure at Abbotsford Convent created by renowned Japanese sound artist Akio Suzuki.
As part of the WinterLive Festival, Akio has created a special “urban listening” trail across the Convent grounds. Follow a map to find a series of listening points marked with painted ears on the ground. Stand on the footprints, pause for a moment, and tune in to the world around you. What can you hear? Birds singing, leaves rustling, footsteps, voices, or sounds you’ve never noticed before?
Akio has created these listening trails in cities around the world, including Tokyo, Brussels and Toronto, and now Melbourne families can experience it too.
This free, self-guided activity encourages children and adults to slow down, explore nature, use their imaginations, and discover the surprising sounds hidden in everyday places.
Perfect for: Curious kids, young explorers, creative minds, and families looking for a relaxing outdoor activity during the school holidays.
