The National Gallery of Victoria’s newest children’s gallery exhibition: ‘Up, Down and All Around: Daniel Emma for Kids’ invites budding designers to learn about the role of creative design in the world we live in.
Adelaide-based design studio Daniel Emma (started by industrial designers Daniel To and Emma Aiston) has created a colourful world where kids are invited to look at everyday objects and express their creativity and imagination through design challenges and hands-on activities.
NGV Children’s Gallery Exhibition 2023
The centrepiece ‘Inspiration Train’ is inspired by a sushi train! It transports small everyday objects and delicious-looking fake food for kids to view, choose and then design into a new object – whether that’s a peanut chair or an apple table. It’s simply adorable!
In another space Daniel Emma has created ‘Build ’em up’ – a colourful set of upholstered geometric forms so that kids can play, stack and build whatever they want with the shapes. It’s colourful soft play for babies and toddlers who may not have the fine motor skills to draw or design yet.
Toddlers and preschoolers are particularly well catered for in the ‘Funny Face Maker’ activity station where kids can create endless funny faces from the sparkly colourful shapes designed by Daniel Emma.
Finally, ‘Stack a Snack’ is an interactive multimedia experience where children are encouraged to play with materials and explore the senses as they mix unexpected ingredients together to design wacky digital cakes. We have a lot of fun creating crazy delights on the touchscreens!
Even better, all of these creative activities are free, so that you can stay as long as you like and really let your child’s imagination run wild!
Up, Down and All Around: Daniel Emma for Kids is located at NGV International, Ground Level – Children’s Gallery, and runs from 2nd June – 8th October 2023.
