Stepping Back in Time

From the moment we arrive, the atmosphere is rich with history.

The mine, which operated during the gold rush boom of the 1900s, offers a genuine glimpse into the past. Donning hard hats and lights, we descend into the depths of Bendigo, experiencing firsthand the conditions miners faced during that era.

The staff make us feel welcome right away and explain everything clearly, even for our kids who have lots of questions. There’s a certain thrill in walking through a working mine siteโ€”with original machinery, old ore trucks, and rusted relics of the past all around you.

A Journey Through Time: The Mine’s Story

Before we even descend into the tunnels, we spend some time exploring the above-ground exhibits. Thatโ€™s where we learn just how rich in history this place really is.

Central Deborah Gold Mine operated from 1939 to 1954, producing a whopping 929 kilograms of goldโ€”thatโ€™s worth around $85 million today! At its peak, the mine reached an incredible depth of 412 metres, with 17 levels and 15 kilometres of underground tunnels.

It was gritty, grueling work. Miners were lowered underground in open cages, worked ankle-deep in water, and pushed heavy ore trucks by hand through the dark. One of the most memorable stories we heard was how they worked using carbide lamps, breathing in rock dust and fumesโ€”and yet, Central Deborah was considered one of the better places to work at the time, thanks to the luxury of hot showers!

After it closed in 1954, Bendigo locals fought hard to preserve the site. The City Council stepped in, purchasing the mine in 1970 for just $6,000. Since then, itโ€™s become a much-loved attraction. The first underground tour opened in 1986โ€”and now you can explore as deep as 228 metres below the surface.

Engaging Tours for All Ages

The guided tours are a highlight, with knowledgeable guides who bring the mine’s history to life.

Our guide, George, is very informative; he makes the tour entertaining as well and can answer all our questions.

Itโ€™s fun to be dressed up in mining clothes, eating underground, and getting the opportunity to have some experiences (like using a drill) of what it was like to be a miner.

These interactive elements keep our kids engaged and make the experience memorable.

Explore the Surface: Above-Ground Fun

If youโ€™ve got younger kids or donโ€™t fancy going underground, you can still enjoy the Explore the Surface experience. This includes entry to the original heritage-listed buildings, an interpretive museum, and heaps of old mining equipment.

My kids love seeing the old poppet head, learning how ore was processed, and spotting the “Hand of Faith” nugget replica.

There’s lots of space to wander, and it’s a great way to ease into the gold mining world without going underground.

Best of all? Kids go free for this part of the experience!
