Atherstone is a new housing estate in Melton, in Melbourneโs outer north-west and one of the major developments of the new town centre is an awesome, fully fenced adventure playground – the Bridge Road Regional Playspace.
The playground is huge and contains equipment that suits babies right up to older kids.
Some of the equipment is fully accessible, such as the carousel, a swing and the water play table.
More adventurous kids will love the long flying fox…

and monkey bars and fireman poles tucked underneath the length of the huge walkway (perfect for scooters and bikes) – a clever design feature making use of a normallyย underused space.
The high nest swing that provides great views over the whole playground.
Other highlights are the natural play elements such as a sensory garden, the numerous opportunities for sand play…
…and a long water channel with a water pump and taps.
Notice the artwork integrated into the rocks which can also act as miniature water channels.
The only improvement I’d suggest is that more shade would be better, especially over the sandpit area or some of the water channel where children are likely to congregate on hot days.
Shelter is provided for the picnic and BBQ facilities. There are also water taps and public toilets, including an accessible one (though no change facilities).
A short walk from the playgound is a cafe within the site development office.
Work at the playground is by Fleetwood Urban, who have also worked at Pipemakers Park, Wulaba Park, Pirrama Park.
The playground will no doubt be a community hub once Atherstone begins to develop and grow and the playground is big enough to warrant a special trip.
