ArtPlay’s booked workshops are some of our favourite child-friendly activities in the city but they also have an awesome regular program of drop-in play called ArtPlay Inside Out.
ArtPlay Inside Out is a place to get creative with others and let your imagination soar. There will be all sorts of inspiring materials on hand for you to create artwork or build a play space together. Explore a different idea and activity each time you visit; make a sculpture out of cushions or felt; then turn it into a cubby house. Wrap and weave using ribbon and rope. Listen to music and cast shadows as you play or have a tea party. Anything is possible!
There are making activities, doing activities and building activities, but there’s no set direction. You can choose to do what you want or to stay for as long as you want.
During our visit, the theme is ‘light’ so the space is dim and there are torches and twinkly lights to play with, drapery and boxes for building cubbies, a projector for playing with coloured shadow puppets and a felt wall.
I really love the ‘junkyard’ feel to the setup. The materials are all inspiring and diverse without being overwhelming. I liked that there are no specific expectations or outcomes, an approach particularly suitable for participants under 5. It’s all about using your imagination!
