Science Gallery Melbourne Presents new Exhibition: SWARM

Hosting two major exhibitions per year, Science Gallery Melbourne is one of a network of seven global hubs exploring the collision of art and science. Pioneered by Trinity College in Dublin, these spaces are helping to play a part in changing our understanding of science, art and innovation and in particular, to use innovative ways of engaging 15 to 25 year olds with science.

Located in ‘Melbourne Connect,’ a new innovation precinct being developed by the University of Melbourne on the corner of Grattan Street and Swanston Street, Science Gallery Melbourne have just launched their new exhibition called ‘Swarm.’

Science Gallery Melbourne creates exhibitions with young people for young people, and the newest exhibition ‘SWARM’ is no exception. ‘SWARM’ aims to discover the intrinsic nature of human behaviour and uncover what drives us to be the social creatures that we are.

Humans aren’t the only social creatures on this planet. SWARM also explores other swarms in nature from insects right down to molecular movements. It then goes further to look at algorithms, drones and nanorobots and the future of swarms and what they mean to our future lives.

With nearly eight billion people on the planet, many who live in an increasingly urbanised and constantly growing network of cities, the idea of swarms is relevant as we are connected both physically in our space but also through technology with social media, crowdsourcing, digitised workforces and global political movements.

These are all concepts explored in this exhibition through a series of collaborative exhibits and projects. This is a great opportunity for visitors to reflect on their place in this world and their role in this collective. Science Gallery asks you “Will you go it alone? Or join the swarm?”
