HOT: Card Art Spaces, ArtPlay, Birarrung Marr, Melbourne

ArtPlay is one of my favourite art experiences for kids in Melbourne and until this weekend they have an awesome free exhibition called Card Art Spaces.

First year students from the Department of Architecture at Monash University have built several cool cubby house structures out of corrugated cardboard within the ArtPlay space. There are seven buildings in total on both levels of the building and they are all perfect for little kids to explore.

Lady AB had great fun sitting, touching, hiding, walking, crawling in the spaces created.

Every weekend during the exhibition you can also join artist Sue Davis for free workshops (7-12 year olds) to sculpt and mould your own cardboard creations. We also joined visual theatre artist Penelope Bartlau to create newspaper puppets to inhabit the Card Art Spaces for one of the paid workshops ‘Paper Creatures Puppetry‘. Lady AB (or I) made a puppet of her Grandma’s daschund Lou. She was actually a little frightened of it, pushing it away and shrinking back when ‘Lou puppet’ gave her a kiss!

She also had great fun not participating in the workshop at all, stacking cushions and reading books. Guess you can’t control what a 2 year old will and will not enjoy!

Keen ArtPlay-ers should note that the next ArtPlay program ‘Caboodle’ will be in homes next week and online on Saturday 8 June and bookings will open at 9am on Saturday 8 June. See you there!
