Hola! There’s a new kid on the block in Seddon, and it’s a good one. Superchido is a Mexican restaurant and bar that specialises in bringing authentic food and drinks to the neighbourhood.
Superchido is the brainchild of brother and sister team Dan and Sarah, who had a successful catering business that served all sorts of cuisines, including Mexican. Superchido is the first permanent location for the pair (who still have day jobs as an engineer and nurse respectively!) and being Westie locals with lots of Mexican friends they are keen to bring authentic Mexican food to Seddon.
It seems that locals are also keen to embrace Superchido. On opening night the place is already booked out and tables are filled with hungry families, couples or solo diners chomping down on tacos and clinking margaritas.
The restaurant’s decor has been given a Latino/cacti makeover (from its previous incarnation as Slider Diner) and looks fresh and fun!
The space is a series of small rooms joined together, so if you need pram access the best bet is from the back entrance on Vigo Street. The covered outdoor beer garden is ideal for a sunny day.
There are numerous high chairs and a little bit of pram access in the beer garden or front room, though note the toilets are squeezy.
There is no kids menu as such because the tight menu of antojitos (snacks) and tacos, ranging from $6 – $13 each, do the job to fill little tummies.
Lady AB and Baby 2.0 dive straight for the ‘las salsas y totopos’, a generous bowl of crispy tortilla chips served with three house-made salsas ($13) as well as the crinkle-cut fries with chipotle crema and a sprinkling of queso anejo ($7). Note the chipotle crema has a bit of a kick so if your kids are very sensitive to spice ask them to replace it with something else.
If you love spice then I recommend the elote – char-grilled corn cob with queso anejo, chipotle crema, spice mix and a squeeze of lime ($6). But my favourite of the snacks is actually the tostada de atun with marinated raw yellowfin tuna, morita crema, salsa aguacate, crispy leek and sesame ($10). It’s a bit messy to eat but I like the textural contrast between the raw fish and crispy tostada.
As for the tacos, there are four options – pork, barramundi, short rib and butternut pumpkin.
If you’re not vegetarian then I think the pick of the fillings is the achiote marinated pork, with a salsa morita, coriander, onion and sweet pineapple ($7).
The kids prefer the more familiar fish tacos.
The drinks menu is three times as long as the (current) food menu, so Superchido is definitely the place to get your party started (margaritas for everyone)!
For non-drinkers try their version of Mexican horchata (a refreshing drink traditionally made with rice, milk, vanilla and cinnamon) featuring their house-made cashew milk. You can choose to add mezcal or rum to it for an extra kick!
Superchido is a fun place to hang out, with Mexican street food meeting cocktails in the relatively quiet strip in Seddon. They’re promising bottomless brunches coming soon (ooh yeah). Welcome to the hood!
