Eco Explorers bush playgroups host sensory and outdoor play sessions for children and families all over Melbourne.
Eco Explorers provide a weekly opportunity for kids to lead a sensory and outdoor play experience with lots of free unstructured play led by qualified nature play educators. The bush playgroups are held in many locations across Melbourne. If you can’t and don’t want to attend their weekly sessions they also hold one-off school holiday programs.
The benefits of nature play are manifold – kids get to appreciate nature, explore the wilderness and connect with the earth.
Some of the activities that children may enjoy doing at Eco Explorers bush playgroups are climbing trees, building nature cubbies, searching for bugs and learning about wildlife, jumping in puddles, nature art and craft activities, Australian storytime and songs.
For the school holidays they hold workshops for preschool and primary school kids. We book into ‘damper making and fire’ because my kids love the idea of camping and campfires, though do not get many opportunities to experience camping.
At CERES Environmental Park in Brunswick East kids are given the opportunity to make their very own damper and then cook it over the fire to enjoy for afternoon tea!

I am not sure how my 4yo and 6yo will go with lighting fires with a flint. But I trust Eco Explorers when they say that research clearly shows that children benefit from using real tools and taking safe risks.
There is some bush tea for the parents.
After the session, the kids venture into the mud kitchen and loose parts play, as well as other nature-based activities.
The session is by Melinda Bito, who has trained in Nature Pedagogy under Claire Warden. She has also worked in numerous community serves roles supporting vulnerable families and children with disabilities.
