HOT: Jack B Nimble, 132 Mitchell Street, Maidstone

Jack B Nimble’s Scandi-chic interior combined with Asian-inspired fare is an unlikely, though very welcome, find in Maidstone. What’s even better is that they’re family friendly too!

The menu provides for all day breakfast and ‘second breakfast’ ie larger, much lunchy meals.

I try the omelette ($19), which is normally a dish I avoid because it’s something that’s easy to whip up at home (with the added disadvantage of being generally unphotogenic!).

But who has time to smoke prawns and sieve a tomato broth at home? Not I! So do make sure you try the silken omelette, wrapped up like a Swiss roll with chunky king prawns, braised leeks and a slightly spicy broth. It’s dressed with prawn and lemongrass oil, chilli, Vietnamese mint and crispy tofu puffs. Oh my.

The French toast ($16) is equally special, with indulgent chocolate dulce de leche, poached pear, mandarin & tangelo compote, earl grey mascarpone, and a slightly bitter milo crumble.

If you still have room don’t go past the madeleines. The three little cakes are baked to order (allow 15 minutes) and served with a dollop of fresh yoghurt ($8). They are warm, buttery and perfectly spongy – definitely madeleines to rival Cumulus Inc’s famous offerings.

The Tea and Spice chai comes brewed in a pot with soy ($4) and the coffee is made from Axil Coffee beans.

For kids there is a small kids menu with Vegemite Soldiers ($7), Ham & Cheese Toastie ($6.50) and hot dog with ketchup, cheese and hand-cut wedges ($10), though the standard menu is also suitable for kids in my view.

Other family friendly features include colouring-in sheets (and customers’ artworks adorn the walls), a large blackboard panel which normally resides outside, high chairs and some pram space, plus a small back courtyard with toys. There is even a change table in the small toilet.

Jack B Nimble was named one of Melbourne’s best cafes in the west in 2016 and it’s worth seeking out for unique brunch deliciousness in an unsung part of town.
