After a long break we’ve finally made it back to Heide Art Bubs at the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen. The twenty spots for these monthly creative and educational art sessions for 0-5 years get snapped up really quickly so it’s only been now we’ve been able to secure a ticket.

October’s Heide Art Bubs sessions are linked to Heide’s retrospective of German-Australian artist Gunter Christmann.

As usual the session began with a picture book with themes that tied into Christmann’s practice. Then we moved to the art room (which during the summer is a temporary marquee while the main education building is being repaired) and made two different pieces of art.

The first was a mosaic, inspired by the tiles on the gallery floor. Each child was given a piece of card, ampoule some craft glue, eggshells to crush into shapes and patterns for their mosaics and paints to colour in their painting. A simple yet fun task – now I know what to do with all my eggshells!

The second activity involved an interpretation of Christmann’s painting ‘The Wall’ which includes pictures of his doll Oskar painted along a view of the Berlin Wall. The kids were encouraged to lie down on a long roll of black card. Then adults drew their outline with pastels and the kids could decorate their silhouette however they pleased.

Lady AB took another approach and drew an outline of her hand and then decorated a standalone picture of me with native flowers and dried leaves.

Once again a delicious morning tea was provided by Cafe Vue at Heide, with cute little babycinos, toasties, fruit and lamingtons.

Heide Museum of Modern Art usually run Heide Art Bubs once (or sometimes twice a month), alternating on a Thursday or Friday. Tickets are $20 for adults ($16 for members/concession) and I believe they are sold out for the rest of the year (but get on the mailing list).  Your ticket allows you to enter the galleries and exhibitions afterwards, though we tend to gravitate to Cafe Vue at Heide for lunch before leaving. I highly recommend their lunch boxes which can be eaten in or taken out for a picnic in the grounds.
