Gardiner Reserve was surprisingly empty on our visit, despite it being one of only two playgrounds in North Melbourne – an area that is increasingly filled with young families.
The playground and surrounding grassy area were neat and tidy and it’s separated into three different areas.
For toddlers there is a fort with various things to climb and slide, as well as binoculars, shop front and steering wheel.

There is also a second sand pit play area with noughts and crosses, an abacus and shop front. Best of all were the two toddler swings side by side – a really handy feature when both Baby 2.0 and Lady AB still need a seat with a restraint.
For older kids there is a fort, spiral slide, abacus, noughts and crosses, various ladders and poles, monkey bars, tunnel and two regular swings. My kids couldn’t get up on any of the equipment there other than the spring rider so it was good to have other options.
While Gardiner Reserve isn’t so amazing that you’d cross town for it I think it has been laid out quite nicely for all ages and it’s a great little community area for North Melbourne and nearby locals.
