Melbourne families are spoilt for choice these January school holidays with so many great theatrical events coming to town.
First up is Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat which is playing at the Playhouse at Arts Centre Melbourne from 2 January to 11 January.
The 40 minute production is based on the classic book by Dr. Seuss, The Cat In The Hat and arrives to Melbourne from the renowned the National Theatre of Great Britain and after a sold out season at Sydney Opera House.
The play stays true to the story, interspersed with gymnastics, jokes, slapstick humour and all round zaniness. After the production all the kids in the foyer (including Lady AB) were asking why the cat left his hat behind on stage. So it’s a production that will endure in kids memories after they’ve left the theatre! It’s pegged as suitable for ages 3+ which I think is accurate – Lady AB was about as young as you can be and still enjoy it.
Tickets were pretty expensive at $40 each (no discounts for kids) and the sloped in-the-round seating of the Playhouse means that all seats will have good views. Frankly I wouldn’t rate the show as high as The Wiggles with the MSO that we saw a few months ago for approximately the same price ($50 adults, $40 kids). But it was worthwhile entertainment to keep school holiday boredom at bay.
