HOT: Colour Sensation: The Works of Melinda Harper, Heide Art Bubs, Heide Museum of Modern Art, 7 Templestowe Rd, Bulleen
Heide Museum of Modern Art’s newest temporary exhibition is Colour Sensation: The Works of Melinda Harper, a collection of three decades the Australian abstract artist’s paintings, collages and painted objects.
The exhibition is very kid-friendly as it’s all about combining shapes and colour into striking compositions and it forms the inspiration for a series of workshops for Heide Art Bubs in the coming months.
The session started off with ‘storytime’ though it was really an interactive art activity using Herve Tullet’s book ‘Game of Lines’. It’s a cool board book for babies which is all about combining different lines by revealing split pages one by one.
Then we completed two further activities within the gallery space. The first was a collage of stickers of different shapes and sizes, influenced by the abstract shapes and bright colours on the walls.

The second activity was using scratch paper and a pointed wooden stick to reveal rainbow patterns underneath. These were then laminated and turned into bookmarks.
The final art activity was inside the Education Centre and consisted of pasting straws of different colours and lengths to create an abstract piece.
Finally kids were then let loose with textas and paper while while we enjoyed our morning tea of Cafe Vue at Heide babycinos, toasties, fruit and lamingtons.
AND….if you’re after a special event to celebrate Father’s Day Sunday 6 September, join myself and Jo Skladzien as we build ‘The Dad Cave', a milk bottle igloo featuring a gallery of Dads!
