Footscray Ice Cream Co is Scoopin’ in the West

Footscray Ice Cream Co has arrived in Melbourne’s western suburbs and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The Footscray ice cream shop (next to Up in Smoke) has a giant mural emblazoned on the wall facing Hopkins Street and they are scooping delicious ice cream and sorbets by the folks behind the Woodend Ice Cream Co.

As Woodend Ice Cream Co is an ice cream company based in the Macedon Ranges, Footscray Ice Cream Co‘s ice creams are hand-churned daily at Woodend and ferried down the Calder Highway.

The menu changes regularly depending on the season. All of their small-batch ice cream flavours use ingredients sourced locally as much as possible.

Their most popular flavours currently? The staff tell me it’s a dead heat between the mascarpone caramelised fig and chocolate cheesecake brownie. What can I say – clearly inner westies have a sophisticated palate!

But don’t worry if you’re a classicist. You can still get a vanilla ice cream flecked with real vanilla bean seeds, a fresh and zingy strawberry and a rich, dark chocolate.

For those with dietary requirements, there’s a large selection of dairy-free sorbets and gluten-free waffle cones if you need. Or even cookies if ice cream isn’t your thing (gasp!).

The ice cream shop has some indoor seating, with high stools overlooking Hopkins Street and some tables, plus more small low outdoor tables (which are shaded depending on the time of day). Or you can buy a takeaway tub of ice cream with your choice of flavours to enjoy at home!

If you need a toilet you can access them via the outdoor beer garden of the bar next door and there you will also find a disabled toilet with a change table.

While parking is in short supply in the vicinity, Footscray Ice Cream Co is just a short walk from Footscray Train Station and the Dynon Road bus stop. And no doubt they’re waiting for the thousands of residents to move into the nearby high rises.
