The Christmas Roller Rink is Skating into Carlton
Grab the kids and your skates and head to the Christmas Roller Rink, a free Christmas-themed roller skating rink at Argyle Square (or Piazza Italia) in Carlton this festive season!
Christmas Roller Skating Rink Melbourne
Piazza Italia has had a beautiful purple-toned festive makeover, with a big Christmas tree, picnic tables, shady umbrellas, fake turf, water taps and portable toilets. It’s the perfect place in Carlton for families to enjoy the festive atmosphere of Lygon Street!
The centrepiece at Argyle Square is a pop-up Christmas-themed roller skate rink by Malt Shop Rollers.
The outdoor roller skating rink is open every day until 24 December from 11am until late, with free entry if you bring your own roller skates or roller blades.
If you don’t have your own gear skate hire is just $5. Adult and kids quad skates and rollerblades are available to hire in sizes from Junior 10 to Mens 13.
The roller rink is pretty big, but obviously, if you’re able to visit during non-peak periods you’ll have more space to rollerskate or rollerblade. Sessions run for one hour, though if it’s not busy you may be able to stay for longer.
As an outdoor rink, Christmas Roller Rink is highly weather dependent, so if you’re not sure check whether it’s open on social media before you go.
We visited on a sunny warm day at around 12pm and the kids needed regular breaks in the shade because the rink got very hot, so I highly recommend hats, sunscreen and reusable water bottles.
There are free lockers to stash all your stuff while you’re skating, and a few wooden benches for spectators next to the roller rink.
While you’re on Lygon Street, don’t forget to grab a gelato, pack a picnic from a nearby deli or eat at one of the many amazing restaurants nearby.
You may even be lucky to pick up some free Italian treats and gift voucher giveaways happening throughout this Christmas Festival thanks to Carlton Inc.
The Christmas Roller Rink Melbourne is running each day until 24 December. I highly recommend you book your session in advance to avoid disappointment, though you can get tickets at the door. Note you’ll need to book a ticket even if you bring your own pair of skates for a free ride.
Also note that children under 16 must be supervised by an adult.
Thinking of leaving the kids at home? There are adult-only evenings happening Friday – Sunday from 8pm. Get your boogie on this weekend (16 – 18 December) while you disco-skate as local DJs play classic tunes with various sets happening from Friday evening through to Sunday.
