We are regular participants of ArtPlay’s booked workshops – but did you know they hold a program of outdoor, drop-in creative play sessions called ArtPlay Backyard?
Designed for children aged 2 to 6, this creative outdoor space encourages playful exploration with various materials. Drop-in sessions run from 10 am to 12 pm on 18 and 19 January 2025.
Fun for Melbourne Kids at Artplay Backyard
ArtPlay Backyard invites children aged 2 to 6 to explore creativity in the great outdoors! Kids can craft unique art pieces build a cubby, or weave nests for imaginary creatures, all while enjoying the beauty of nature.
Behind ArtPlay’s main building is a shipping container full of art materials which opens up onto a wooden deck and the patch of green next to the ArtPlay playground.
Every day is a different theme for making, doing and building activities. Explore innovative ideas like creating secret garden trails, building obstacle courses, or crafting homes for imaginary creatures.
When we visit the theme is about exploring sounds and colour. There are buckets for dropping in objects, tin pans to bang in on the line and pipettes for creating colour combinations.
The play is all open-ended and you can choose what to play with and how long you stay. There are Artplay facilitators on held to provide some direction, but the structure is very loose.
Adult supervision is required, and we recommend bringing extra adults for larger families. Please note that in extreme weather, events may be cancelled, so keep an eye on their socials for the latest information!
ArtPlay Backyard is a fantastic free space in Melbourne’s CBD for families to explore and play together. It’s particularly good for younger kids as it’s the sort of creative play that helps them to learn about the world around them. An accessible bathroom is available on-site.
