The winery has a cellar door knocked out from under a rock formation and a fine-dining restaurant with a set menu.

If you’re visiting with children you may not want to linger at either of those locations…

But don’t worry – the best views are actually from TarraWarra Estate’s more casual venue The Deck.

The Deck is open 11am-5pm during the warmer months. Each day it offers a menu of platters and nibbles from 12pm-3pm. The views are stunning, with an expanse of sky sitting atop rolling vines. You can borrow a picnic blanket and choose a glass or bottle of wine to go with your lunch.

Other than the fact that you have to go inside the cellar door to order and pick up your food, the location is perfect. It’s outdoors and lined with wooden flooring so the venue is pram-friendly. High chairs are available.

We try the yabbie saffron aracini with aioli ($14), gin-cured ocean trout, goats fromage frais and rye crisps ($15) and pickled octopus with taramasalata and pita bread ($15). There menu also lists toasted piadina, cheese and charcuterie boards and small bites from $6. There is a further note – ‘children are welcome at TarraWarra Estate restaurant and we can alter portion sizes for little gourmets.’

After lunch we poke our heads inside the foyer of TarraWarra Museum of Art but decide against paying the $10 entry fee (for adults, children free).
